Anyone dyed a 100% wool jumper in the washing machine?

Shock I would normally use Dylon hand dye for wool, but I've seen some posts online where people say they've dyed wool in the machine. The posts are universally sketchy on details. Can it be done using the Dylon hand dye version? On the wool cycle? Would I chuck the dye powder in the drum? Should I put salt in the washing powder tray? Or is this an utterly stupid idea? Have you done it? Successfully or not? TIA.

I’ve dyed a cotton/wool/cashmere mix in the washing machine (using machine dye) on 40% thinking I’d get away with it cos of the cotton content. I didn’t - it bobbled and felted pretty badly. I’ve only hand dyed wool since then.

Thanks. Maybe if I specifically use the wool dye? Sorry about your cashmere. Sad

It was a charity shop buy so a risk worth taking Smile I’ve never tried the wool dye in the washing machine but it’s a thought,..

Yes I've done it with an ebay buy that claimed to be washable at 40, but it shrank, matted, and took very little colour. If trying again I'd use the hand dye in a bucket.

I have had success with knitwear but only when it's mostly cotton.

Thanks. Don't think I will risk it.

I read on here that you can revive cashmere by wetting it, then working in hair conditioner and leaving it to soak. It worked on the one that was not too bad, but the other turned out to have moth holes in it so I chucked it before I finished.

I tried about 20 years ago and it came out patchy and not as dark as it should have done. I think the cardi was pre washed as it didn't shrink but I know you'd risk felting it.

Having said that my fave going out cardi is a felted m and s one I got from oxfam!
