Neither stylish nor beautiful - but people who stand pitch-side for hours on end

...what coat do you wear to keep warm?

None of my coats were up to the job last winter. I had a medium thick down one - not quite warm enough and not waterproof enough. My three in one hiking coat left me chilly too.

Where can I get a coat, designed for standing around pitch-side, to keep me cosy (in addition to my hats, thermal tops and leggings, double woolly socks etc)?

Brands/shops/types of coat that can cope with wind, freezing temp and rain - suggestions please!

My practical but ugly Lands End full length down duvet coat has done me seven or eight US and UK winters. I've bought a couple of other more stylish coats but always end up back in it as it's the warmest and has the best hood. I don't think it's very waterproof - have not really tested it thank goodness.

I wear wellies
with extra socks and sheepskin linings with foil bottoms to keep the cold out (recommended on a thread here a few winters ago).

Lands End and Didrikson seem to be the winners. Problem is, I will need to try the darned thing on (I range in size from a 10-18) Confused
So I should have been more specific - I can get to a Blacks, Cotswold, Millets, Trespass, Mountain Warehouse. Plus Sports Direct, if they sell proper coats.

Tell me where to go and what to try for maximum warmth Grin. It is good to find my people!

Lots of layers and thick soled walking boots with thermal socks work for me but what I CAN'T do without are my fleece lined walking trousers. They are heaven and I love them! Grin

Moon boots make a massive difference. The sole is well over an inch thick so your feet are really insulated from the cold ground. You don’t have to do that lift one foot then the other thing that makes you look like you’re dancing.

I bought my Didrikson from Black's.

My DH regrets the style he choose as the angle of the pockets isn't great if you want to keep your hands in your pockets...

Blacks sells Didricksons and have a couple of designs exclusive to them.

I’m also 5’5 and am in love with my Didricksons Vilda parka for the reasons everyone says above. It’s toasty warm, has endless pockets, zips up cosy round the face but without being too huge hood-wise, and actually even looks pretty stylish on.

I bought it to replace my Lands End Squall parka which I just didn’t feel was warm enough. It’s only a fleece lining on the upper half of the parka and lightly padded on the bottom half and it didn’t keep me warm during last winter’s big freeze. I now wear it for autumn dog walks but wouldn’t trust it for really cold weather.
