I'm looking for the warmest possible option for chilly school runs. I own a ski jacket but think I can do better for warmth with a down one. Recommendations under £100 please if such a thing exists??

Are the uniqlo ones any good?

Jack wills have 25% off at the moment - I've just bought a down padded parka. Got an extra 5% off as a new customer as well

Yes to Uniqlo. They do different weights of coat as well. I have a big long poouffy one and a small jacket which stuffs into a bag. Warm, no fussy logos all over them. Got a nice Berghaus one as well.

I have a lovely Hollister one, v warm.

Thanks, I'll have a look. Warmth wise are they all much of a muchness or are some brands better eg rab, North Face? They are ££££.... I really feel the cold so need a good technical coat!

How do you wash them? Dry clean only?

I have just bought the Jack Wills Brampton with the 25% off. Feels really cosy. Have always washed my down coats in machine and then tumble dry with tennis balls which helps distribute the feathers

Mountain warehouse - they were 50% off earlier in the week. In the details they state how cold they were tested to, mine says -30 and was £80

I have Uniqlo ones. I love them.

Corneliawildthing · 27/10/2018 20:32

I'd check if it's waterproof before you buy it. I once bought one, only to find it was just showerproof and had to get rid of it as I was fed up with having a mass of soggy feather-filled material around my shoulders and back every time it rained Sad

Ooh I like the look of the Jack Wills Brampton ..is there plenty of down in it or is it under stuffed?

Would you consider an alternative to down?

I have a North Face triclimate which is very warm - it is filled with Primaloft, which is synthetic. Mine is also waterproof. I got it from the outlet so it was a good price, however for a bit less there are other Primaloft filled coats on the high street.

I wouldn’t wear down for ethical reasons - geese are plucked alive - and there are plenty of modern alternatives, which are also arguably better on factors such as weight and staying warm even when wet.

Brampton has kept me really warm today on Dorset's windy beaches!

Can a down coat (tag says responsibly sourced) which is 600 fill keep a chronic icicle like me warm? It looks really thin. I ordered from Landsend.
