Clothes storage- fold or hang?

I have limited space and too many clothes at the moment there is a short rail with trousers and jean hanging up. There are open shelves above with folded jumpers and t-shirts.

The problem is, despite my good intentions, when I rummage looking for a top, some of the others are disrupted so that they look crumpled. So, should I fold the trousers/lay them out on the shelves instead?

What do you do? If you have acres of colour coded items in plastic covers this may not be the thread for you, I may sob with envy!

I would fold trousers and jeans and hang tops up

It might not work as well on an open shelf, but I have more drawer space than hanging, so t-shirts get rolled and put in a drawer, and so do jeans. That way they aren't on top of each other so no rummaging. I hang jumpers, shirts, dresses, skirts and smart trousers. You could probably roll jumpers as well.

I did try Marie-Condo-style rolling, but I think I'm too slap dash for it to be sustainable!

Yes, I came on to say roll. Works well for camis, t-shirts, jeans and leggings. In fact, anything that won't crumple.

If you have a spare drawer or two, then even better. That will free up more hanging space.

I Marie Kondo roll t-shirts, strappy tops etc - jersey style fabrics generally and put into drawers.

Jeans get folded into a drawer, but its a pull out basket style (Ikea)
Smart trousers are hung on a low rail, along with skirts.

Tops that might crease get hung above... colour coded from black on the left down to white on the right.

Small full length wardrobe has a couple of long dresses, plus other dresses (not many).

Shoes get thrown into end of bed blanket boxes, bottoms of wardrobes, shoe holder in the hall, etc. Completely random.

I think you might benefit from having boxes or fabric baskets on the open shelving, OP.

I aspire to this.

Many thanks everyone, I think I've used a little bit of advice from each of you. The power of Mumsnet!

I've rolled t-shirts etc in trays, folded jeans and big chunky knits and hung everything else.

The pic doesn't show it clearly but it's a whole load better than it was. Thanks again :)
