Can any hair colouring experts give me an unbiased opinion?

My hair is very dark brown with some white hairs - about 30% on top I'd guess, less at the back. I have been getting my hair coloured with Wella Colour Touch semi-permanent dye. I want to start to let my natural colour come through with a view to stopping colouring my hair eventually.

For several months I've only been having the roots coloured and have switched to a quarter shade lighter recently. This doesn't fully cover my white hairs, just blends them in which is fine.

Trouble is that the old longer hair that hasn't been coloured for several months has become very warm toned - red/golden. I don't like it and the contrast with the cool silvery tones on the top of my head is not nice!

My hairdresser says that there's nothing she can do about this. I suggested using a toner but she said that if I want to stop colouring my hair then that's pointless as I'll just be adding colour.

She also says that if I have highlights to lighten my hair they will inevitably be golden as that's what happens when you lighten dark brown hair.

I don't know whether she's hoping that by telling me that I'll change my mind and carry on colouring my hair (and paying for her services to do it of course) or whether she's right.

I could go to another salon for a consultation but I'm concerned that they might tell me they can do something just to get me to spend £££ with them (when they can't).

Can anyone give me an opinion on whether I can successfully cool down my unwanted brassy tones? I've tried purple and blue shampoos but not noticed any improvement.

Many thanks

I’m not a hairdresser but I have a lot of warmth in my hair so my hairdresser uses a very ash colour in mine to tone the warmth down. L’Oreal Anoa (think I’ve spelt that right). I’m sure someone professional will comment soon 😀

Thanks Fullfatlatte.

If I can't get anything done them I'm contemplating having most/all of the brassy hair cut off. I've got a pretty much one length long bob at the moment - could get layers cut in and be done with it I guess.

I had some terrible brassy balayage and used Wella Color Fresh (Dark Blonde) on it which cooled it right down. The problem is that it will wash out really quickly but that's true of any toner-type product.
