What to do with crap beauty stuff

Nakedavenger74 · 25/10/2018 09:34

What do you do with beauty stuff that is the wrong colour or never lived up to expectations? Doggedly use it or throw it away as lost cause?

For example I have 4 primers on the go in my make up drawer:
This works on transit camera close up:crap and sticky
Chanel Le Blanc: gloopy and too thick
Stila multicoloured colour corrector thingy: too damp, make up has slid off by my first coffee
Benefit Porefessional: perfect, smoothing, holds makeup all day

So every morning I reach for the Benefit. The others sit there taunting me and I think 'oh I'll use them up at some point' because otherwise surely it's a terrible waste.

So what do you do? Persist with the crap product until it's finished so it's not a 'waste' or think life is too short for crappy primer, cut your losses and chuck the bugger (whilst being triumphant in your clutter free make up drawer and having found the holy grail of things)?

Chuck. Out.

Juicyfrooty · 25/10/2018 09:41

Pass onto a friend wasn't there a thread on here where mumsnetters swapped products?

alittlebitofritasallineed · 25/10/2018 17:20

I've been wondering this, have loads of expensive tanners that don't work but cost me ££'s

thedevilinablackdress · 25/10/2018 17:30

If it's genuinely no use, I'd pasd on to someone else or chuck out.
Then only buy stuff I know is decent in future, and stop being lured by the shiny new things.

Viviene · 25/10/2018 18:14

Chuck it out. Read Marie Kondo ;)

DaCruzon · 25/10/2018 18:15

I put duds on Freecycle.

QueenofLouisiana · 25/10/2018 18:25

Mine goes to teenage daughters of friends. They are all different colourings and tastes so can sort it out between them.

starrynitelight · 25/10/2018 18:25

If it's high end you can take it back after getting it home and using it. Such a waste of £££ otherwise!
Cheapo id throw out

Sitranced · 25/10/2018 18:30

What good would taking it back do? They're only going to throw it out also. Give it to someone who'll use it.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 25/10/2018 18:32

Chuck! Life is too short to wear make up you don’t like.

Weezol · 25/10/2018 18:34

Is there an amateur dramatics company or student theatre near you?
My local one nearly took my hand off when I offered a bag of cosmetics so anything that doesn't work for me now goes to them.

whereisthatpenguinfrom · 25/10/2018 18:37

Put on Facebook marketplace for £1 and a teen interested in make up will be along soon - or if you know someone with a teen offer it

Olivecake · 25/10/2018 18:37

If it’s in good condition (eg relatively new and only lightly used) then either give it to a friend or donate. Try a local women’s shelter or send to Give and Makeup: www.escentual.com/-and-advice/about/give-and-makeup

Olivecake · 25/10/2018 18:39

Sorry last link was wrong - www.escentual.com/help-and-advice/about/give-and-makeup

starrynitelight · 25/10/2018 19:23

What good would taking it back do?

You get your money back!

Nakedavenger74 · 25/10/2018 19:24

Thanks all. Just taken a good look at that drawer and planned a make up and toiletries swap with some pals.

I've Marie Kondoed the life out of the rest of my possessions so why I didn't apply it here I don't know. The guilt of the crazy expensive Chanel foundation weighs heavy and I've been ploughing on using it in case Ive changed my mind then being irritated by it all day.

I've even got a Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser that makes me look tangoed which I'm keeping for a time when I have a deep golden tan (I have never had a deep golden tan in 44 years)

No more.

Give to a beauty bank , like a food bank but for make up and toiletries

www.the-pool.com/beauty/beauty-honestly/2018/7/Sali-Hughes-and-Jo-Jones-launch-Beauty-Banks

thedevilinablackdress · 25/10/2018 19:56

Beauty banks etc only take unopened items

Nyon · 25/10/2018 19:57

The beauty bank will only take unused goods but a local woman’s shelter might take them if they’re lightly used. Try your local one of those?

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 25/10/2018 20:15

You can send to me, in Ireland, I've no money and need nice things!

Or failing that, Freecycle?

MichelleBolton · 27/10/2018 06:28

I'd love your unwanted stuff! I volunteer for a women's and children's refuge in a big city and they'd be more than happy to offer the products to the lovely women who come to see us. Don't want to say which as it's outing. We provide clothes for interviews and school uniform and pencil cases for the kids. The women would love make up bits and don't mind if they're a bit used x

QueenCuntyFlippers · 27/10/2018 06:42

I’d return to the store. I just spent £££ on Bare Minerals foundation, serum, moisturiser, cleanser, etc... after a few days my skin was stinging and really dry.

I couldn’t bare to spend that much money again so I returned the lot. Still need to buy again but don’t know where to go!

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 27/10/2018 07:02

I love the idea of donating to a women's shelter - this would be a lovely gesture for women who are dire need of something to brighten their days. And for some women, that brightening is a bit of lipstick or skin care items.

Am dram groups is another good idea.
