Recommendations for basic make up and face stuff for a 12 soon to be 13 year old please

I’ve a 12 almost 13 year old to buy for for Christmas.

My girls have expensive tastes they fund themselves, and I like Superdrug cheapies, apart from foundation, so I’ve no idea which way to go for Christmas stuff for her.

Budget 20 quid or so, maybe 30

Was thinking some real techniques brushes maybe? Or a top end eyeshadow palette, or would that be a waste?

Oooh you're going to get your arse handed to you for wanting to buy this stuff for a 12-13 yr old! Grin

I got dd (14) some Revlon and Maybelline palettes last year. I'd never buy high end palettes. I used to love the Givenchy ones when I was in my 20s but none of them are worth the ££££s.

Online, on websites like Allbeauty and Feelunique, at this time of year, you can get things like "Christmas crackers" with a lip gloss, nail varnish, and a couple of eyeshadows. I got some of those last year as well.

😁 I did wonder but she’s already interested and has some bits so I thought it would be an easy cheapish present.

Funny I wondered about a “set” too.

I kind of thought if I got her some half decent brushes they would last her but I dunno that she would appreciate them. But me and my girls use all real techniques so I know they’re worth it

Ooh it’s tricky. Do you know if she wears make up?
My 13yr old doesn’t but my 12yr old loves stuff like that.

New Look voucher always goes down well with both of mine or a Costa voucher.

Pai do really good starter kits for skincare for around £20, my 13yr old uses their blemish serum.

Benefit also do some nice little sets.

I'm 26 but I feel like I'm still 12 😂.

When I was that age and started wearing make up, Rimmel and Maybelline were winners and they're often on 3 for 2 in boots with gifts around this time of year.

Barry M and Revolution (I think that's in Superdrug only) have copies of some of the higher end palettes like the two faced chocolate ones etc.

Thenewdoctor · 25/10/2018 07:12

She does wear some make up. Tinted moisturiser and lip gloss and mascara.

Also - No7 do brush sets for about £15 at Christmas which are decent value. Again, 3 for 2 on Xmas sets!

Thenewdoctor · 25/10/2018 07:16

Thanks everybody. I think it’s some brushes and some make up sets then !

Ill hit Superdrug and boots.

Thanks again.

Brushes are for powder, highlighter, blusher, eyeshadow. Your daughter doesn't wear any of those, so why get the brushes?

Thenewdoctor · 25/10/2018 07:23

She’s not my daughter.

I was going to get some brushes and some basic eyeshadows and blusher.

Try TK Maxx. I bought dd a couple of lovely, high end eyeshadow pallets from there recently and she was thrilled with them Grin

keepmoving · 25/10/2018 08:19

Real technique brushes are a good idea. Part of the appeal of makeup is the trying on - my DD loves a trip to Superdrug to try out the colours. I work in beauty and she has access to a lot but she still prefers the discovery.

Boots or Superdrug often have a real techniques brush set in their deal of the week/ half price offer so worth keeping a look out over the next few weeks.

Zampa · 25/10/2018 08:27

I got this from Benefit for my DSD when she was a similar age:

www.benefitcosmetics.com/uk/en-gb/product/fine-one-one

It's a blush/highlighter which has a powder finish. No need for brushes, doesn't produce an overly made up look and is fun for experimenting. It does lips too.

HildaZelda · 25/10/2018 14:58

The RT brushes are a good idea. Superdrug often have them on 'buy one get one half price' offer. Body Shop brushes are good too. I have some that have lasted years. Bit more expensive then RT, but not crazy prices either.

Fishandthechips · 25/10/2018 15:43

Too faced do some amazing sets at Christmas time. Im tempted to buy some as gifts myself. There is a big eyeshadow palette, mini lipgloss and mini mascara set in Debenhams which is around £30.
Superdrug often have Real Techniques brush sets as one of their star buys so its worth keeping as eye on them to see if they go on offer.

peachypetite · 25/10/2018 15:45

Benefit for 12 year olds?! I was wearing Miss sporty eyeshadow at that age

Thenewdoctor · 25/10/2018 15:48

I don't want to spend a lot on eyeshadow I don't think, because by the time she gets to wearing it a lot, the fashion will have changed. But my thought process was that decent brushes would stand by her and she would always have them.

There is some really good inexpensive make-up around. Try Rimmel. I honestly think their eyeshadows are as good as the top range ones, for a fraction of the price. Maybelline mascara is fantastic - way better than ones I've bought for four times the price.

But if she wants a bit of designer glam to show off in front of her mates, how about a Chanel nail polish or lipstick.

TantricTwist · 25/10/2018 22:17

I bought a lovely eyeshadow pallete from Superdrug the other day for my DD 11, one of the reloaded ones, it was only £4 and has lovely shades.

She applies it brilliantly it has to be said.

She removes it with a REN make up remover I had lying around that I never got round to using.
She only practices at home, she never wears it out.

mycatplotsdeath · 25/10/2018 22:23

Real techniques brushes or a Naked eye pallet would be great
