Recommendations for toning down yellow roots in bleached hair

Hi everyone!
Went to the salon last week to get my roots done and they have now turned very brassy with orangey streaks underneath.
Called into the salon yesterday and was less than impressed as they are going to charge me for the privilege of getting a toner put in it to correct their mistake.
Really unhappy with the service I have received.
How would you ladies deal with it and any life saving products to return me to an icy blonde?
Thank you all in advance xx

You could try a purple shampoo

0lga · 23/10/2018 14:54

You can buy purple toner yourself .

Remember to give the salon a review or two.

TruffleShuffles · 23/10/2018 15:07

I would try a purple shampoo and see if that makes a difference. I really like the bleach London one, I would get the conditioner too as I find the shampoo can be quite drying but along with the conditioner it works really well.

Thanks everyone!
I already use purple shampoo but all it does is make the ends whiter and the roots more noticeable. If I could have the roots looking like the ends I’d be delighted! 🤣
Being blonde is hard work..

It's really easy to do at home. I use Fudge clean blonde shampoo. I've tried A LOT of purple shampoos and this one is by far the best, both in terms of colour, toning ability and not completely drying out your Barnet.

Wear gloves as it will stain your hands. Apply to roots / most brassy areas first, wait five mins and shampoo through the rest of your hair. Be prepared to use several applications to really remove all of the yellow / orange tones.

If your ends are damaged or dry, they will be porous and will 'take' the toner quicker than the roots; you might end up with a bit of a purple rinse if you leave the shampoo on the ends for too long. But this shouldn't be a problem if you do the roots first as above. And purple is preferable to brassy anyway

Do you think they didn't leave the bleach on the roots long enough in the first place? Sounds like a big difference between the roots and the ends considering it was only done recently

JulesBA · 23/10/2018 15:53

Yes I’m pretty certain they didn’t leave the bleach on long enough.A girl who I used to go to in London but can’t anymore as I’ve moved home over 2hrs away used to leave bleach on for over 30mins,check it then put some more on if needed. The toner she used was only put on for 5 mins and my colour always looked amazing! This salon put bleach on for 25 mins, washed it then put on toner for 25 and it looks cheap. My hair looked like Ronald McDonald before they put the toner on! I hate being a brassy blonde but I think they’ve abit of a cheek asking me to pay for their mistake!!

Definitely not left the bleach on long enough. Same happened me recently and salon redid it for free, no questions asked.

Purple shampoo and toner can only do so much, if the hair isn't lifted to the correct level of pale yellow then it won't go icy white....and the band will look more obvious as the toner will whiten the rest of the hair or turn it lilac on the ends.

JulesBA · 23/10/2018 16:28

Yes FellSwoop I agree.I think they just want the easy way out as putting a toner on is easier that applying bleach. With a toner I’m just going to have the same problem in a few days.
Should I insist I want it rectified?

I would. Do it in person, in the salon. Say you are not happy, that you know toner is not going to fix underbleached hair, it is their fault for taking the bleach off too soon, and point out that if it is not lightened ASAP then you will end up with a band of yellow that will be harder to correct as your new roots come in.

FellSwoop · 23/10/2018 16:51

The further this band of yellow hair gets from your scalp, the more difficult it will be to correct to have a clean blonde all over.

LikeCherOnlyTiny · 23/10/2018 17:09

Josh Wood shot of colour, the lilac one, from Boots. It’s £2.50. You can mix it with any white/pale conditioner, you don’t need to buy the separate mask. Try applying it only to the roots, get a friend to help if needs be.

JulesBA · 23/10/2018 17:12

FellSwoop you’ve hot the nail on the head.Im going in tomorrow and will be insisting they fix the problem not with a toner but with bleach.
It’s a major inconvenience with a 6 month old!

Ugh! I hear you! It's hard enough finding time to get to the hairdressers at the best of times but doubly difficult with a little one!
I remember similar happening to me when my DS was about that age...I ended up giving myself a DIY root stretch at home with a dark blonde dye because I couldn't cope with the banding/find time to go back. It looked nice but it wasn't what I wanted...plus was a nightmare to get rid of when I eventually decided to go back to all- over blonde.

JulesBA · 23/10/2018 17:31

Yes FellSwoop I can see you understand the hard work of being a platinum blonde 😂
Thank you for all the advice

DeltaG · 23/10/2018 17:34

Yes, sounds like the bleach wasn't left on long enough. Unless you have extremely dark hair that won't lift lighter than orange?

Ask the salon to correct the mistake at their cost, otherwise you'll be putting a photographic review of their work to date online.

For future reference, bleach London's white toner works well.

JulesBA · 23/10/2018 17:36

Thank you DeltaG.I must try the Bleach toner as I keep hearing good reviews about it
