Chelsea boots - lovely or hideous? Can’t decide.

Just that, really: Russell and Bromley. Can’t get my head around the shape of the elastic but I like the rest of it!

I’m looking for non-clunky, low-cut ankle boots that don’t gape around the ankle, and that I can wear with jeans or dresses, and will cope with being outdoors in the winter. Something that will last - not faddy and likely to hold up to fairly enthusiastic wearing. Maximum budget about £300. Help!

I don’t they would hold up to enthusiastic wearing tbh and the elastic makes them look a bit faddy - so in short they’re everything you say you don’t want Grin

ZenNudist · 23/10/2018 09:49

I like them. I dont buy R&B just because seem very spendy. The elastic makes them different.

ZenNudist · 23/10/2018 09:53

how about these?

BillywigSting · 23/10/2018 09:53

I like them but I'd want to know how the sole is attached. It looks very thin and if it's only glued or not stitched or nailed I can see them falling apart very quickly.

I quite like the elastic too. They still look classic because of the general shape of them and the colour but that stops them from very cookie cutter and boring I think.

senua · 23/10/2018 09:55

What's the point of making the shoe out of "weather-resistant black suede" and then having a huge section of (presumably) non weather-resistant elastic.
Do you want soggy feet?

ZenNudist · 23/10/2018 09:56

The ones I posted are probably too clunky

ffffffffsake · 23/10/2018 10:13

They're quite nice but I don't think for nearly £300 they are classic or premium enough. You could have bought similar in Primark for £8 a few years ago.

ChishandFips33 · 23/10/2018 10:32

Dr Martens Chelsea boots will tick some boxes for you regarding outdoor/winter wearing and enthusiastic use. The youth version in Schuh look lower on the ankle and are a fraction of the price!

Could you buy a practical and a fashion pair to need your needs fully

Yogurty · 23/10/2018 10:43

Lots of responses - thank you!

Yes I think the Carvela ones are a bit too clunky - I’m really short, have skinny ankles and tiny feet and I sometimes feel swamped in big boots.

Maybe that’s the problem I have with the elastic - the fact that it goes down to the sole - not sure how it would cope with rain. The sole in real life is pretty robust I think but not as solid as the Aquitalia boots that I bought from R&B thousands of years ago (still going strong).

How about these? Williams Craftsman - a bit more expensive than I'd like!

Or I really like these: Dubarry one and Dubarry two.

I hate the two labels on the Williams Craftsman Boots - there is no need for the one at the front and it spoils what would be an otherwise nice boot imo.

Are you wanting black or brown boots?

Cherries101 · 23/10/2018 10:57

Primark do very similar looking boots for £10 and they feel more premium when you put then on than the ones Op has linked.

Bluntness100 · 23/10/2018 11:00

What about these. Much neater.

What about these

one. They’re nice in the tan too.

too high cut?

three

four

five

Yogurty · 23/10/2018 12:36

You are all fab - thank you.

I'm after black boots - the Dubarry ones come in black but they show on the website initially as tan.

I like the Barbour boots and I really love the Grenson Izzie boots (Superstar's number three), and there's another pair on the Hudson website that I like too. Think I need to get myself to a Proper Shop to do some trying-on.

I want them to last - I bought my last pair of boots six years ago and they still look new (ish). I bought my wellies when the children were at infant school and they're fully grown up now... I'm fifty-four and probably won't buy any more boots now before I retire!

The Clarks Taylor Shine are similar to some of the ones you like, for a fraction of the price: www.clarks.co.uk/c/Taylor-Shine/p/26111965

Joules do nice ones too ... I like the different colours in the loop at the back (tho these ones are out of my price range, but not yours!): www.joules.com/Women/Shoes-Boots/Westbourne/Chelsea-Boots/Black-Velvet?id=Y_WESTBOURNE|BLCKVLT

TheGrassIsGreener3 · 23/10/2018 15:16

Those ones are hideous (sorry).

Yogurty · 23/10/2018 15:40

That's OK, TheGrass - I wanted a bit of robust feedback! Everyone I know is a bit too mealy-mouthed in real life (unless drunk!).

Quite like the Clarks ones too...
