Sorry, I'm an intruder in Style & Beauty but I think you'll have the best advice. I've reached that age when vertical ridges develop in your fingernails and one has started to split. I keep it clipped as short as possible and try to file the ridges out but the split is moving down into the nail bed. I'll have to cover it with a plaster to stop it catching but is there any thing I can do to sort it out?

I've heard reinforcing it with small piece of teabag material and clear nail varnish works. I have a similar issue.

Have you seen the teabag repair method?

I've not tried it, but it always looks interesting!

Here's another version of the same method: www.wikihow.com/Fix-a-Split-Nail

A beauty therapist would repair the split and give the nail a chance to grow.
Suppose you would have to have all nails short to match that one before polish was applied.

Thanks all. I will try the teabag and report back if successful. Failing that I'll try a beauty therapist. Sorry to appear so naive but would I find one in a nail bar where they do the extensions or where?

Gaining a teabag, use a thin layer (take the layers apart) of toilet roll and cover with nail varnish.

I have my nails done at a beauty salon ( gel manicure every 3 weeks).
You would have to see what's available in your area, and maybe look for recommendations.

A good nail tech will be able to sort it, and can advise on how you can avoid it happening again.

I wouldn't bother messing about with teabags- sounds like a bit of a faff.

Yes on reflection, a professional is the best bet I guess. Thanks for all your help.
