Autumn / Winter how to look expensive (other than buying a nice coat!)

Every winter I seem to end up in skinny jeans, trainers, and a shapeless jumper. If I'm outside I wear a tatty red wool coat or a cozy but unattractive navy puffer jacket. If I'm at home I loose the jeans and put on pyjama bottoms Blush.
This year, on the advice of the other "how to look expensive" threads, I've bought a nice leather biker jacket from Oasis, a warm, navy, long wool coat from Debenhams (both second hand but in perfect condition), and some black chelsea boots.
I think this will go some way to redeeming my lack of "style" when I'm outside, but does anyone have any suggestions for when I'm inside and take my coat and boots off??
In the summer I think I look quite nice and well put together, but I like being warm, so gravitate towards comfortable slouchy clothes in the winter, and end up feeling very unattractive. I'd like to look a little more "put together" but without sacrificing warmth! DH and I have also just started going out a little more now that the DC are old enough to leave with a babysitter, so suggestions to look a little bit sexy (and warm! Is that too much to ask?! Grin) are also welcome...
For reference, I'm early 30s, size 8-10 pear shape but with a muffin top (thanks DC!), 5'7", and have "winter" colouring. I wear hospital scrubs at work, but only work 3 days / nights a week so spend a lot of time in jogging bottoms my own clothes.

Buy a few heattech long sleeve thermal t shirts from uniqlo. They are amazing, you wear them under jumpers/tops and they keep you so cosy. I also rate fleece lined opaque tights and sheepskin insoles for your ankle boots. That way you can wear normal smart/casual outfits but be toasty

Ooh Gulliver I’m about the same height and size as you! Sadly not quite early 30s but I’m on a mission to look expensive too.. here’s what I’ve done so far:

  1. I’m trying to stick to a consistent colour palette so that everything goes together. Not necessarily ‘neutrals’ (not convinced camel is my colour) but a set of colours that match and make getting dressed easier.
  2. Taken things to the tailor when they need taking in or up. Means I actually wear the things in my wardrobe!
  3. Tried to de frizz my hair (probably my biggest fail in looking expensive as I am too lazy to blow dry). Heated rollers are my friend!
  4. Nothing frilly, flouncy or with cut-outs. Tailored rather than tight.
  5. Make a Pinterest of expensive looking people and work out what they have in common. For me, I kept pinning people wearing skinny jeans, pointed toe ankle boots and lovely knitwear or a blazer. So I upgraded those things - got a pair of leather skinnies, a black tux jacket and a couple of lightweight fine merino/cashmere knits to go with my boots...

I would say invest in some nice jumper which are good quality and good materials.

If you have a nice, soft, good quality knit on it will make you feel more done. I quite like UniQlo for affordable basics.

Regarding making an effort inside, more for when you’re at home but don’t want to feel too scruffy, get some posher PJs/lounge wear. I like Oysho - they have some nice stuff which is comfy but still looks nice! They also have a few cute jumpers.

Also, having your nails, eyebrows done always makes someone look more put together! Even if I’m wearing a decent outfit I don’t feel very smart if my nails are chipped etc.

I would say for your height and shape, skinny jeans (as tight as jeggjngs but skinny jeans are generally better quality) chelsea boots or trainers are good, with a nice top/blouse with an oversized chunky knit cardigan or an oversized jumper. If you're feeling brave nice long sleeved, short feminine dress works well with tights and boots too

You might not have a muffin top if you wear high waisted jeans. A lot of pear and hourglass shapes have a soft squishy bit just above their hipbones and a little belly below naval. Normal jeans sit too low for those shapes and have to be hitched up all the time which looks like they don't fit and doesn't go with the polished look you want. High waisted stay put.

Cropped jumpers are so in just now and so many to choose from.
