I have bought both of these for a very posh Thai dinner.
Dress code is 'ladies must be elegant and wear appropriate footwear'

The long one I've bought in navy with silver shoes & bag, it is stunning and well cut and flattering
The shorter one I thought might be more appropriate for Thai dinner, in the heat. I would wear rose gold shoes & bag

Another factor is that the boyfriend is wearing white jeans and a shirt and I don't want to look hideously overdressed

Second one

If you are concerned about being overdressed then the second one, definitely. The first one is lovely but pretty dressy. If you find every other woman is wearing evening gowns then you can wear the first and maybe your boyfriend then should wear something smarter.

AmabelleOnabike · 15/10/2018 13:22

They are both beautiful. I would go with the first as I think it is more elegant but in keeping with your boyfriend's outfit the second might be less formal and therefore the better option.

SD1978 · 15/10/2018 13:23

Elegant is difficult. Second one is too informal to be elegant. First one has bared shoulder, which can be an issue (to some) what kind of age is the inveter? Would they class covered shoulders as elegant? Juts how posh can a Thai restraint get? Micheline star type posh?

SD1978 · 15/10/2018 13:24

Just seen boyfriends outfit. Do the men not have a dress code? Then I'd go with second if he's dressing down in jeans.

GameOldBirdz · 15/10/2018 13:25

Second one. You'll look a right pillock in the floor-length black gown if your partner is rocking up in white jeans.

Floor-length black gown = Oscars siren
White jeans and a shirt = 90s Ibiza club DJ with over-gelled hair

It's at the mandarin Oriental in Bangkok
Large party of about 100 guests

Ummmmmm, I'd seriously consider having words with your BF about wearing jeans with that dress code!!!

Agree with others, both dresses are lovely and tbh I'd wear whichever you feel more comfortable in... However it's the Mandarin Oriental, so I'd be all over that floor-length one personally!

DailyMailcanfuckthefuckoff · 15/10/2018 16:09

Saying all that^, I'm always more comfortable being over-dressed than under-dressed. I think it's a lot easier to pull off being over-dressed than the other way around.

MozzchopsThirty · 15/10/2018 19:47

I just don't want to try too hard
Me & boyf are deffo not posh
