Tell me about teeth whitening- do I have to pay loads?

Please advise me! My teeth are healthy but looking pretty yellow- I had them whitened with a groupon deal around 6 years ago which looked good but they've gradually become more stained (annoyingly I can't remember the actual stuff they used but was around £200)

Do I have to pay loads for teeth whitening? The internet is completely saturated with home use strips, polishes etc, but I just want something that is going to work well and quickly! Also- is it true that any proper whitening needs to be done by a dentist?

There is a BUPA dentist near me that offers zoom whitening- you have to pay £30 first for a check up and then the actual procedure costs £420 for in chair whitening.

Is it necessary to pay so much?

Thanks xx

My dentist charges £200 but it's a home-use system. You have a set of trays made and then blob some solution in and either wear for an hour during the day or eight hours overnight. I think my dentist said that refills of the solution would be £40 (if I look after the trays!) and I noticed a difference within 3 days. The brand name is Boutique.

I had the mouthguards too that you use over night for about 2 weeks.
Cost around £250 from my dentist. Every few years I pay about £25 for a couple of tubes of the whitening gel.
Has made a massive difference.

Crest white strips do work if you want a cheaper option.

I used Boutique too, from the dentist but you do it at home for two weeks an hour a day. It works brilliantly (I only did top teeth so I could compare with bottom teeth and there is a BIG difference). Need to do bottom ones now!

Cost £250 but loads of gel left so you can do top ups if they start to yellow over time again. New tubes of gel are about £25 each so once youve paid the initial £250 you can maintain white teeth for about £25 a year

Get correct tray made then use Opalescence gel. Works wonders.

Zoom will give you a quicker result, but honestly, I'd go longer route trays and just not bother having done both.

Another vote for Boutique whitening!

Here's what I do to keep my teeth American white :)

See your dentist twice a year for a regular, professional cleaning.

Buy a Water Pik and use it every night, as well as brushing/flossing every three times a day.

Crest White Strips. Before anyone tries to say they are bad for your teeth, I have never had a filling, and the British dentist comments every time I see her on how perfect and healthy my teeth are.

Stock up on (cardboard, not plastic) drinking straws, and keep them stowed in your purse. Only drink coffee, red wine, or anything that isn't water through a straw. This goes a long way to keeping your teeth white and cavity free.

And chew sugarless gum as much as possible around the house. This is good for your teeth and gums.

I will get a professional fluoride treatment from an American dentist when I am back in the US at Christmas because I am not sure if the drinking water where I am in the UK is fluoridated.

Blimey

It'll be a cold day in hell before I drink red wine through a straw Grin (or coffee for that matter!)

I admire your dedication. Flossing three times a day PLUS waterpik every night?!

I don't understand how you drink coffee through a straw? Doesn't it burn your throat? I am impressed by your dedication though. I don't drink red wine because I hate it but I drink plenty of white so I suppose that helps a bit. I got the trays created by my dentist and once a year do the stuff for a week. They're not bright white but enough white to make me feel like my smile is okay. I use whitening toothpaste daily and yes chew gum post meals as well. I'm mid 40s and they look okay, might need to up my game as I get older I guess.
