Please help. Dying bleached hair at home.

I need help please. I have hair that had to be lifted with bleach to remove a heavy red dye. It’s now a brassy blonde and I’m really fed up of having to deal with the regrow this regularly.

I would like to dye it dark blonde. My natural colour is darkest blonde/mousy brown.

I’m really worried that it will turn green or go really dark if I just buy any old dye from the supermarket.

Advice please. Has anyone done this successfully at home?

I don’t mind if it’s lighter than my natural colour, close enough is ok. Anything other than this brassy yellow disaster will be an improvement.

Honestly, I would go to a good salon , it’s difficult to do this at home and not end up with that awful khaki colour.

I have successfully done this before. If you want to go dark blonde rather than light you should be ok with a box dye but it depends on what your hair looks like now. Have you bleached it already?

Semi-permanent light brown. I did this after using a hair stripper to remove red. Don't use permanent as you harsh. I chose a couple of shades darker than my natural tone. I think I have pics...I'll have a look and post them if I can find them (was 2.5 years ago)

Red (middle) > horrible orangey-yellow bleached hair (top right) > light brown (bottom left)

Oh thank you @figelnarage

That is pretty much exactly how my hair started, is now and the result I would like. Will any semi permanent brand be ok?

@barker yes it is bleached already. Mainly done with a lifting tint but there is some bleach on it also.

@oddcat I know you are right about a salon but I work odd hours and it will be weeks before I can get a long enough appointment in opening hours that I can actually make.

Would purple shampoo help?

CrumpledStiltskin · 13/10/2018 22:14

@tissuesosoft I have tried the purple shampoo and conditioner route and unfortunately it made little to no difference.

The regrowth is the issue now though. I really don’t want to keep adding another yellow stripe each time I do my roots.

You need an ash based light brown.

I've done this a few times and it's always worked.

If you've used a colour stripper you'll need to use a semi permanent one part process dye, like the ones in superdrug.

Hi OP. I'm fairly certain I'd have used L'Oréal casting creme. Looking at the dates on my pic I left only 2 days between removing the red dye and adding the semi-perm light brown. Good luck 🍀

Definitely go for an ash light brown or dark blonde, if you pick a warm colour it might have very brassy undertones
