Can someone please fix my rubbish hair?

I never blow dry and only use straighteners very rarely (like 3 times a year). I use Argan oil on the ends daily, wash it about every 3/4 days. I use natural cocoa butter shampoo and conditioner.

I've started plaiting it at night to avoid rubbing on the pillow.

Yet it is still so dry looking and is thin and fly-away.

Any advice for luscious shiny and healthy locks would be most welcome!

I am not sure if it will help, but a couple of weeks ago by chance I used Head and Shoulders it hy scalp shampoo ... someone commented on how lovely and shiny my hair was, if I had been to the saloon ... yesterday again I used it and today I went to Hairdresser and he commented how amazing hair I had! Trust me my hair was average before... worth the try.

I would probably try to blow dry a bit, with nozzle pointing down as I heard that gives more shine as hair has “scalps” , but not too much.

Can you try and see what happens? I am curious if I am the only one who had good results with that shampoo... which I would have considered a cheap alternative in the past ...

sleepismysuperpower1 · 12/10/2018 17:26

i would try a hair mask. here is how to make one for dry hair:

Avocado & Egg Yolk
½ an avocado
2 egg yolks
Mix ingredients well. Apply to wet or dry hair and allow to sit for 15-20 minutes before rinsing and washing hair.

Knowivedonewrong · 12/10/2018 17:30

How often do you get your hair cut?
A good quality intensive hair mask will help.

whiskyremorse · 12/10/2018 17:30

Have you tried using any curly girl products? My hair looks like yours when I don't use product. Have a look at Trepadora, I love their primer

librarylover53 · 12/10/2018 17:38

My hair would be similar if I didn't blow dry! I rough dry, then use babyliss big hair and quick run any odd bits with straighteners. Doesn't take long but makes such a difference. Regular hairdresser visits also necessary!

cortex10 · 12/10/2018 17:39

I ought one of these recently - really expensive but my hair is definitely much sleeker/softer https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00V50A2X4/ref=mpsa19sit?ie=UTF8&qid=1539362296&sr=1-9&keywords=mason+pearson+bristle+brush Needs to be the pure bristle version

Amrapaali · 12/10/2018 18:11

RedandBlue you aren't the only one. Almost all the shampoos in the HS range make my hair shiny. Also Loreal Elvive Dream Lengths makes my hair so soft and touchable. I sound like a corny ad but its true.

OP these shampoos may be worth a try. I'm glad at last high street shamppos for a fiver give good results Smile

t00dle00 · 12/10/2018 18:13

Osmo hair mask from salon services. Huge tub for £8.

Rarfy · 12/10/2018 18:16

Its having it lightened which makes it look dry. I would get a good oil like moroccan oil if you want to splash out or loreal elvive ones in the supermarket are nice. Let it dry naturally. Use a salt spray and serum just on the ends to smooth.

If you want some volume use a volumising powder when dry. V05 and gosh do good ones.

SheeshazAZ09 · 12/10/2018 18:20

In addition to the product advice given on this thread, I think you have the wrong cut/style for your hair type. I'd go to a really good hairdresserbe prepared to pay ££ first timeand ask them for suggestions for a cut that will make the best of your hair. They should listen to your 'lifestyle preferences' (eg how much time you like to give your hair) and suggest some solutions. Depending on your face shape, I'd go for chin-length or just below.

JellieEllie · 12/10/2018 18:24

You need some of this Moroccan oil.
I frazzled my hair to the point I ended up losing 9 inches off it around 2 years ago (home bleach job, do not recommend!)
I now have lovely long hair right down my back past my bra strap. It's shiny and sleek and extremely soft like silk.
This saved my hair. I apply it every time I've washed it and it's still wet and then massage more into the ends. A tiny bit goes a very long way.

Satin pillow cases are an absolute must!

SagelyNodding · 12/10/2018 18:47

Another Head and Shoulders fan here! I also have long quite fine hair and it makes it super shiny! I'm trying castor oil at the moment to try to thicken it up a bit, but I think I might be wasting my time... A good cut is a must.

Fatted · 12/10/2018 18:54

Your hair looks like mine does if I don't do anything with it. I either blow dry mine straight followed by the straighteners or put some boots curl cream on it and defuse it to make it curl nicely.

Highlove · 12/10/2018 19:19

Yep another one here who’s hair is like that when it isn’t blow-dried or straightened. I’m sure some of the products mentioned might help but I think some of us just have hair that needs work to make it look good!

tootstastic · 12/10/2018 19:35

I agree you need to blow dry and finish with babyliss big hair. Sleeping with Philip Kingsley Elasticizer on once a week will help with the dryness too. Mine looks limp as anything unless I blow dry.

nicebitofquiche · 12/10/2018 19:35

Which head and shoulders do you use? Do they have different kinds? Like for fine hair, dry hair etc? I'm going to buy some tomorrow on this recommendation because I know someone who has really shiny hair and found out today that's what she uses and now I've seen this thread I can't wait to try it.

Ohyesiam · 12/10/2018 19:39

Your hair is quite beautiful i think. But second Curley girl. Trepadora and boule me. Oh and Cantu curl custard.

Frazzlerock · 12/10/2018 20:04

Thank you for your responses

I've heard that about H&S but I try to only use very natural products and also avoid SLS's (though I don't know if H&S contains it or not).

To those who say blow dry, I've always been told that hairdryers really dry out hair so I've steered clear and let it dry naturally. Also I don't have time to dry my hair as I shower in the morning and run out the door for work everyday.

Re the colour, yes I agree it doesn't help! I had rose gold hair over the summer which I adored but it had to be bleached first so now the rose has faded I'm left with bleached hair.

Re the cut, yes! It does need a good cut as it been a good couple of months. But was tempted to grow it out with the idea of having lovely long soft curly hair, but I think I'm dreaming.

I don't brush it for fear of making it more frizzy. I used a wide toothed comb when I wash it and it's still wet.

Is Moroccan oil better than argan?

This is the cut I had over the summer which was good but never glossy like the picture and my hair is far more frizzy/wavy so it was not quite what I expected.

You probably don’t want to hear this but you should probably go darker with your colour. Your roots seem quite dark - if that’s your natural colour than the rest of your hair went through quite an intensive bleaching session. Bleaching your hair like this is much more damaging than blow drying it lol - your ends are starting to thin out. Your hair won’t grow out nicely in it’s current condition without a cut unfortunately, you may end up with raspy, thin ends.

I would probably go a bit darker, a glossy mid brown on your light bits (or match your roots if you want!). And get 1-2 inches cut off so it’s full and even again.

Re the brushing - I don’t think it’s healthy that you predominantly comb your hair when it’s wet. Your hair is much more susceptible to stretching, breakage and damage when wet so it’s not the appropriate time to comb out tangles. You should get the tangles out when your hair is dry and only giving a light comb through when wet (ie hair with no tangles).

The picture of the model has styled waves, ie with straighteners/curling iron and products, it’s not the same as your hair texture unfortunately so you wouldn’t be able to achieve that by just letting your hair dry naturally with no styling.

Violetparis · 12/10/2018 20:40

Head and Shoulders (original one) makes my hair shiny too.

Wavyheaded · 12/10/2018 20:47

Hi, my hair looks very similar to yours except dark. It's dry like all the time. I'd say you need a deep moisturising hair mask. I tend to alternate between organic oils, and hair masks that you can buy in the shops.

I recently tried this Natura SIberica one, it is amazingly moisturising.
www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00O3GW5M8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?psc&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8

It contains silicones, but I've decided my hair needs some silicones sometimes, as it's just too rough and tangly without it.

Frazzlerock · 12/10/2018 20:55

@hannnnnnnxo thank you that is useful info!

I was always told not to brush when dry but to use a wide toothed comb when wet. But I will give your advice a whirl.
You're right in that my natural hair is dark brown so bleaching didn't do it any favours at all. I was just so desperate for rose gold which did look great for a while, but I'm paying for it now. I'll get it cut and re-coloured with a more gentle colour, as you say.

It's a pity as I prefer my hair lighter but I think I'd rather have it healthy!

Op- I really suggest blow drying, and doing it pointing down with the nozzle. Plus using some of the products suggestions
I have a lot, lot of hair and two years ago invested in a good hairdryer and it only takes 8 min.
The days I need washing my hair I put my alarm 10 min earlier in the morning. You said you do it every 3/4 days ... could you do that twice a week?

librarylover53 · 12/10/2018 21:45

I try to only use natural (paraben and SLS-free) products too. Honestly though, my hair has been blow dried since I was child and it hasn't damaged it. I get it cut every 8 weeks and it's in good condition. I'm not sure how you're going to achieve a more styled, less frizzy look without a bit of styling!
