Growing your hair longer as you get older instead of going shorter

I'm just wondering if I should try this.

I'm 42 and bored with my hair! I always wear it up (tbf this isn't what I'm bored with as such, it suits my face shape and hair type to wear it up) and for the last 15 years it's been roughly shoulder-length, slightly layered with a long side-swept fringe.

It's annoying hair because it's fine but there is LOADS (and loads and loads) of it. It has to be layered otherwise it does that godawful triangle thing, sadly no sleek bobs or lobs willl work here. I also can't go short as it looks like a toilet brish. Plus my face shape is quite long/oval so short hair looks dire on me (I'm really making myself sound attractive here, aren't I?!)

It's kind of a bit wavy, a bit straight. Actually that makes it sound more shit than it really is. It's wavy, but my fringe stays generally straight.

I'm just wondering if growing it longer, say past my shoulder blades, will look really awful or be a bit of a good change. I'd still wear it up, is the thing, but obviously if it's longer it might have a slightly different look when worn up.

I don't LOOK 42, but neither do I look 25.

It's in OK condition, it tends towards dryness but it's quite strong hair.

Sleek and incredibly kempt it is not, but tbh I've long since recognised I will never have sleek, neat hair. It's wavy and a bit uncontrolled (hence wearing it up) but I'm kind of working with what I've got rather than wishing it away.

More length might mena (am no expert!!) I could have more layering which would break up the heaviness a bit?

Any other ideas? I'm SO BORED!

A toilet BRUSH. I have no idea what a toilet brish might be.

Do it! If you have a lot of hair let it grow long and get an undercut at the back. It'll reduce the bulk.

I'm growing my hair longer as I get older. I've had short/pixie all through my 20s and 30s because it was in bad condition from all the dye I was using to cover the grey. Now I've let the grey grow out I'm growing it long because it will now it's in good condition.

Have the hair that you want not what your age says.

Hi, your hair sounds very similar to mine, lots of hair but fine with a slight wave which is currently near bra strap length, I went to an amazing hairdresser who sort of cut it so the weight is all at the end of my hair, so it’s all swishy & falls beautifully, but also looks good when I put it up with a large clip, but this is the first time in many years that mine actually looks good at this length when it’s ‘down’ purely due to an excellent haircut, so in my long winded way it’s certainly possible but the cut is key.
