Are there new rules for makeup in hand luggage 2018?

Hello,

I am flying tomorrow and have read conflicting articles on what is allowed within the clear liquids bag. One article even mentioned that pressed powder may have to go in the clear bag. I usually travel with DH and luckily we share out liquids. What makeup has to go into my clear bag? Thanks in advance

I put lipstick, lipgloss, mascara, foundation, concealer and liquid eyeliner in. Can't see why pressed powder would need to go in since it isn't a liquid.

Maybe they are confusing pressed powder with things like compact foundations as they become spreadable?

I just shove all my makeup into my hold luggage anyway as I've never felt the need to reapply during a flight, but you can take as many liquids as you want as long as no individual one is more than 100ml.

I agree!
I'm flying from Liverpool and have checked their website which states no more than 10 items. Usually when I go from Manchester it has more than that squashed into it!

BookMeOnTheSudExpress I'm guessing the OP is bringing carryon luggage only rather than feeling "the need to reapply during a flight"

You must put liquids gels and pastes in the clear plastic bag. A powder compact does not need to be put in that clear bag. There are no new rules this year.

Apparently the UK is to follow the rules of the US and New Zealand about powders, according to The Telegraph back in July. I'm flying with hand luggage so unfortunately do not have a bag for the hold.

MondayTuesdayWednesday thank you for the update I just wondered if anyone had flown recently and seen this new rule. I couldn't bear to see my precious collection of makeup confiscated.

I wish they would be consistent about this....I forgot I had a lip gloss, mascara, eye pencils, spare new contacts and a lens case in my bag and no one batted an eye at my handbag after security. (Edinburgh)

But if you don't wear your swarovski necklace and shove it in your case you end up having your shoes scanned after a pat down! (Vienna)
AND having car keys (Edinburgh) or loose change (Amsterdam) in your handbag...again, lots of men peering in your bag.

It's probably best to put all makeup in the bag with the liquids, but consistency for all airports would be helpful.

I flew out to madeira on Monday and there were no apparent changes from Birmingham Airport. As usual, mascara, lipsticks, lip balms, cream eyeshadow, tinted moisturiser went into the liquids bag. Eyeshadow crayon, powder blush and powder eyeshadow were left lurking in my bag without any issues.

However, I've found that Manchester Airport seem to make up their own rules as to what is a liquid even though I always check the gov.uk website before travelling in case of any changes.

I'd say if in doubt, put it in the liquids bag to save faffing at security.

Don't forget anything that is gel - like or gel - type has to go in the bag.

At duty free they put turkish delight in a sealed bag for precisely this reason.

I flew to Greece in August from Gatwick, having stayed over at an airport hotel the night before.

I put mascara, lip gloss, Clinique City Block and lip balm in my plastic bag. Bronzing powder, blusher and eye pencils were in my make up bag.

I did get my bag searched but all clear. No idea why.

MinesaPinot · 11/10/2018 13:08

Sorry, relevance of saying I'd stayed over was that, in usual circs, I would put my make up bag in the hold luggage before leaving home. Staying over meant that I had to sort it out for my hand luggage as I didn't want to bother unlocking the luggage straps and the suitcase itself.

Airports are so inconsistent in enforcing these rules. When I flew back from Lisbon at the weekend the woman in front of me had two enormous plastic clear bags of liquids some of which were much bigger than the 100ml limit. It made my one tiny bag with a lipstick in look very weedy.
