ethically produced jeans

After watching the Stacey Dooley documentary this week I want to make sure my next jeans are ethically produced.

But I really need to try on before I buy, and most seem to be only available by mail order. Yes they take returns, but I like to take 10 pairs into the changing room & choose the ones that flatter my big bum, short legs and wobbly thighs the best.

Thoughts?

i would try Next. here is their statement on ethical trading www.next.co.uk/ethicaltrading/ . you can buy online or in store :)

Joules is also ethical as far as I know, here is their ethical trading statement: www.joules.com/responsibly-joules

I'm thinking of the more specialist suppliers.

Next refused to be interviewed in the documentary.

Unfortunately they are mail order only

Not sure why you need a specialist supplier for jeans, other than clever marketing they're no different from anywhere else.

Tesco jeans have a large label in detailing how they're made. And they're great jeans.

You could have a look at Nudie Jeans -

Haven’t bought any myself but thinking about it - will let you know how I get on if I get some!

Charity shop? The most ethical way of buying clothes!

Charley50 · 10/10/2018 22:54

@eatthepineapple - was just gonna say that.

snowgal · 10/10/2018 23:01

Howies as previously mentioned, or www.hiutdenim.co.uk which are made in Wales

ksb76 · 10/10/2018 23:19

eco warrior princess has a great piece on the best sustainable jeans brands - organic cotton is better than conventional. ecowarriorprincess.net/2017/06/5-sustainable-ethical-jeans-brands-for-the-hip-not-hippie/

If you are anywhere near Hebden Bridge, Dynamite in Hebden Bridge stock many environmentally and ethically aware brands, including Howies.

BikeRunSki · 10/10/2018 23:30

Hiut Denim was set up by the woman/couple who originally founded Howies.

Floisme · 11/10/2018 07:17

I guess it depends on how you define ethical but if you want to be confident they're not from a sweatshop then Community Clothing is a social enterprise and all made in the UK. Sorry I know you said you'd prefer a 'real' shop but I can't think of anywhere on the high street, other than charity shops as other posters have already said.

grumiosmum · 11/10/2018 08:18

BikeRunSki gets what I'm after. sadly I'm nowhere near Hebden Bridge.

It's not just about sweatshop labour, it's about the high amount of pollution caused by the dying process and also the chemicals in growing the cotton.

I was looking at Hiut jeans online & thought they looked great, which is what prompted the thought that I'd rather try them on first. Jeans are an everyday staple for me and I don't want to end up with pair I don't love because I haven't tried them on with loads of others.

Bombardier25966 there's no way I'd buy jeans from Tesco, one of the least ethical retailers in the UK.

Delighted with the Hiut Jeans I bought earlier this year. I bought one pair because they had the size in stock, but had to wait for the size I needed to be made. Apparently they've caught up with demand now.

Grumio

Are you anywhere near N London ?

Thought clothing might float your boat, although they only have one style of jeans on their website.

BikeRunSki · 11/10/2018 21:09

or s Patagonia shop?
Store finder

grumiosmum · 11/10/2018 21:45

Am in London quite a lot so thanks for that suggestion.

I must have visited that website before as it comes up purple.

Haven't thought of Patagonia for jeans, will check them out. I like them as a brand.
