Went to do my roots last night and held a mirror up to see the back of my hair and was horrified,it is so thin i could see my scalp on the crown, thinning generally, but didnt expect that

I have been using the Roots shampoo from Superdrug but not made any difference
Please help me find something to help hair regrowth,
Devastated

Go to doctor for a full blood check. It may be a nutrition/thyroid problem. If that's the case, better to get it sorted, as no product will do so much as fixing the source of the problem.

princesstiasmum · 10/10/2018 23:20

Had a thyroid test all ok, i wondered if using heated rollers could have caused it, it does seem to have happened since i staeted using them, also had low ferritin, but was told not to use iron supplements,as i have normally got too much iron, Also taking Livial HRT, so could be that
I knew it was thinning due to menopause probably but didnt realise it was so bad
Also could be female pattern baldness, but hope not
My mother and grandmother were almost bald, at least very thin on top, but mine is mainly one side,

Can you afford to see a trichologist?

justwantedalaugh · 11/10/2018 08:38

Heated rollers won't have helped IMO, as they pull on your roots (they are heavy) and they are heated so are hard on the hair.

justwantedalaugh · 11/10/2018 08:38

My hair has thinned somewhat from being on medications for years. Depressing, isn't it?

Raven88 · 11/10/2018 08:43

My mums hair is like that, started when she was 45 maybe try a shorter cut, less weight on the ends will give you more volume on top.

Also wigs are an option if you struggle with it. You can get nice ones that are cut in a modern way and they are being used more by younger people as a fashion accessory.

Also a powder that matches your hair might be an option to disguise it.

Raven88 · 11/10/2018 08:45

Could also be tension alopecia. I remember a hair dresser talking about it. It's when you start to lose hair because of styling that pulls the hair.

I tried lots of supplements and shampoos but nothing helped. The only thing that’s made me feel better is going grey!

I was dyeing my hair dark brown and that really emphasised my pale shiny head! I’ve since stopped dyeing it and am now fully grey/silver. My hair loss is much less noticeable.

Bit drastic but I feel better now.

I’m a full time wig wearer (or rock the bald if it’s not too cold!). First lost all my hair at 19, over the period of about 10 days, and it’s been a relapsing/remitting picture ever since. Menopause was the final nail in the coffin, and now I keep the few tufts I have shaved. It’s tough initially, I’m not minimising it, I have shed many tears over my bald head over the years, but there is life on the other side. It’s tempting, but I’d try and avoid spending a fortune on snake oil. The only evidence based treatment that you can get without prescription is minoxidil. But it’s expensive, the regrowth is often not a good texture, and the moment you stop using it, your hair will start to drop again. Good luck!

ArkAtEee · 11/10/2018 09:47

Low ferritin will do it. Go back to your GP and push them to find a treatment that works for you before spending money on a tricologist.

princesstiasmum · 11/10/2018 10:07

Thanks everyone for your comments,no couldnt afford a Trichologist, but its not as bad as it could be yet,the hair from my forehead up to the crown is still thickish, so growing it to go over the crown, the right side from hairline was the start of thinning
Re;ferritin, i have Haemochromatosis, which is an overload of iron, so have to have about 1 litre of blood taken sometimes, but my ferritin got very low, as i build it slowly, i did read that ferritin should be over 70 to have healthy hair growth, but my Dr says i shouldnt take extra iron, i tried it anyway, and my nails grew longer and stronger, for the first time in about 2 years,
I have stopped with the heated rollers, as they did burn sometimes, and that is why i wondered if it was because of them,
Ihave not got to the wearing a wig stage, but worried as my mum wore a wig for about the last 20 years of her life
Also just been diagnosed with borderline Diabetes, which has shocked me too , as non in my family and i am not overweight, [about 8.5 stone
I am going to go back to my Dr and see what he says,
Although i am quite slim [and just under 5ft tall], i have put a bit of weight on, for no reason, normal eater, etc,
So maybe another thyroid test, as i believe it can go up and down
Also though had a very stressful 18 months, so that could also be a factor maybe

The Philip Kingsley trichologist site says to make sure you are eating adequate protein. They recommend a protein breakfast (egg or some such). Could you take Brewer's Yeast tablets?

You could try proteinised hair care - something like K-Pak or Redken Anti-Snap to strength and build up the hair you do have.

princesstiasmum · 11/10/2018 10:15

justwantedalaugh thank you for the link, according to this androgenic thinning might be the reason, as i an on livial hrt, and it has something equivalent to testosterone in it
