Please tell me about stripping colour from hair!

I have box-dyed my hair for years to cover greys, so my naturally mid brown hair is more or less black now. I would like to try and go lighter again, so I guess I would have to strip it first. Has anyone done this and can recommend a good diy kit for this? Is it easy? I’ve read somewhere that after stripping you can’t re-dye it for a while - is that true?? If so I might have to reconsider!
And the big one: is it really damaging? I have curly/frizzy, slightly dry hair already so I don’t want to cause too much damage.

Colour B4 is good imo. You can recolour straight away but only with a semi dye. I also didnt notice my hair being any drier after using it.

You could try the Vitaminc C shampoo method first, it's cheaper & not as damaging (it is a bit drying though so condition well afterwards) google it for method. And you can use a permanent or a semi afterwards.

You could start dying your roots a lighter shade and get regular cuts.

I used to box dye my hair red for years (dark burgundy red, not fire engine red). My hairdresser stripper it for me so I could go lighter. I had to have it coloured brown after the strip - as it was orange afterwards, before being able to go blonder

Thank you all!
PointlessUsername do you have any idea how long it is until you can apply another permanent dye? Good to know I can at least use a semi though.

You can use a permanent dye after about 2 weeks.
If you use colour B4 the instructions have a Q&A section.

I've been here...I'm now ash blonde and it was a looooooong process. Your hair will be stained (as in permanently) so it won't be easy to lift.

If you can, go to a hairdresser. At least for a colour consultation, preferably for them to do the lightening for you.

If you can't do that, try a clarifying / deep cleansing shampoo (Vosene / Head and Shoulders both good). Have a good conditioner treatment on standby. This should help lift the colour after several uses.

Colour B4 is a real gamble. Read reviews if you haven't already. It either works or leaves your hair orange and stinking. It did the latter to mine. If you're ok with this and confident to have a go at colouring yourself afterwards, go for it.

Good luck, let us know how you get on. Thanks

Thank you! If I’m brave enough to take the plunge I’ll return and update!

I used colour b4 and went a lovely strawberry blonde, dyed it with a permanent dye minutes after and was fine
