Help! I need a coat for watching football in the rain.

DD has just started playing football for a local club, yesterday I stood in the wind and rain watching her and my winter coat did not cope well, I was drenched to the skin, I could barely move my fingers to open the car afterwards! So anyone know of a great coat that will keep my dry, preferably long enough to cover my bum, accommodate a jumper underneath and with a hood (umbrella broke on the walk from the car to the pitch). Looks like rain again on Saturday.

I swear by lands end squall stadium coats. Waterproof, windproof, fleece lined, fleece pockets and lots of useful big pockets!

I am out of doors in all weathers for work and my Land's end coat has always kept me warm and dry in adverse weather!

The stadium coat is longer (knee length) than their parka/ jacket squall.

I wear every day at work in winter, so for me £200 price is worth it.

I find I am warm just wearing a shirt sleeve tee shirt with mine at this time of year and a with a light weight cardi in winter.

not sure of budget, but try here link

The Northface Arctic parka. Copes with everything especially when it gets freezing during those endless football games.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 07/10/2018 13:15

I have a Superdry Ashley Everest Jacket and it's bloody lovely 😁. I'm a size 12 and got a Large so I can wear several jumpers underneath if necessary. Loads of pockets too.

wonderstuff · 07/10/2018 13:45

The North Face one looks great but perhaps a little too much, I rarely spend much on clothes, but £200 to be warm and dry seems reasonable. Lands End one looks like it will do the job, just a shame it's not prettier (I know I won't actually care while out on a Sat morning).

I have the same dilemma. Bought one from Uniqulo last year that wasn't as eye-watering price wise as many but does a good job (I still look somewhat dumpy in it but in mid winter I stopped caring!)

I am outside a lot - DS plays football 3 times a week, have dogs to walk etc... and I also swear by Lands' End coats. They are so warm and well-designed. Plus, I have never managed to wear one out - they are indestructible. I've got the Squall Duffle, which I think looks quite nice (as functional, warm, waterproof coats go).

dreamingofsun · 07/10/2018 16:38

agree lands end good. i've had 3 do football/rugby and also have a dog. keep and eye out for their sales too as they do some really good bargains.

wonderstuff · 07/10/2018 17:07

So lands end seems to be the best in terms of function/value, but they don't do free returns and I don't know which style to go for, I'm 5'4", so in between petite and regular sizes, like the idea of the stadium, but worry it will completely swamp me. Debenhams don't seem to stock it in regular, do they have any other stockists? I'm sure there used to be Lands End shops everywhere but the website only lists their outlet store..

I used to wear a superdry parka (fleece lined). It's the warmest coat I've ever had. Also has a hood. I'm sort of glad my son drives himself to football now, although a small part of me misses cheering from the side and chatting to the other parents ...

TheHoundsofLove · 07/10/2018 20:39

wonderstuff Well, I'm 5'3 and always go for the petite version (if available)...

FreshEyre · 07/10/2018 23:35

I also agree with Landsend for great oats without spending a fortune. I have a couple of their down jackets for 'cold but dry' days and then a full-on knee length coat with hood for November-March.

Buy some nice thermals - I always feel better with warm, light layers underneath my big coat, particularly if we go for a cuppa/lunch after the game.

I would also recommend some Merrell boots, wearing thin gloves under mittens and a fleece hat. It's a standing jokes amongst the 'touchline parents' that we all look so unglamorous but at least we're warm.

Dridkinson withstand anything t!

Waxlyrically · 08/10/2018 09:00

I’ve got two lands end coats. A commuter down parka which is the ultimate in warm and dry and a squall jacket that is a bit lighter. The jacket was a recent sale bargain - I’m 5ft 3 and the regular just about covers my bum as it’s slightly longer at the back. Both are really good quality and functional but I don’t think they would win any fashion awards!

dreamingofsun · 08/10/2018 19:21

i'm 5ft 5 and i buy regular from lands end. agree with the thermals suggestion - socks, longjohns and vest. long is good as you wont get a damp bottom/top of thighs when i it rains

beanaseireann · 08/10/2018 20:48

I second the Landsend Stadium Squall coat.
On a cost per wear basis it's excellent value.
It's a pity there isn't a wider colour choice.

winterisstillcoming · 08/10/2018 21:13

Can't help with coats but get a contigo coffee flask.
