Cleaning a diamond solitaire ring

I've just had my engagement and wedding rings resized, they are cleaned as part of the process. It's the first time they've been cleaned since new, 17 and 15 years ago respectively.

I am in awe at how gleaming they are. In particular my diamond, reflecting light in all directions. I guess general wear and muck (not to mention 4 children's worth of grime) had gradually dulled it.

It has made me commit to cleaning my rings more frequently, something I've never done before.

So my question is, how do you clean and care for the appearance of your diamond rings?

Toothpaste and a toothbrush. Recommended by the jeweller I went to for cleaning and so effective

Growingboys · 06/10/2018 22:01

I buy diamond cleaner from Waitrose - it's a pot and I drop the ring in and brush it

Justmuddlingalong · 06/10/2018 22:03

Brown sauce dissolved in warm water and a toothbrush.

mineofuselessinformation · 06/10/2018 22:03

Leave in hot soapy water (washing up liquid) for a while and then brush with a very soft toothbrush (i.e. a baby's one or similar). Rinse and dry with a soft cloth.

l put my engagement ring in a little pot with a bit of vodka or gin. Leave it for a bit, then give it a shake. Rinse it under the tap, dry it on some lint free cloth, and bingo!

Soak in warm water with a bit of washing up liquid for a good 20 minutes and then scrub gently with a soft toothbrush. Rinse well under warm water.
I could not believe the crap that came out of mine, it looks so much better!

Spam88 · 06/10/2018 22:15

I take it in to the jewellers every 6 months.

FATEdestiny · 07/10/2018 08:19

Thanks everyone.

I do wash the pots every day (by hand!) so my rings are soaked in soapy water daily, but still they dull.

What I think it might be is there's a gap underneath my stone where it's raised to fit over my wedding band and I think that's where dirt is building. When I look up from underneath my rings now, I can see the light through the stone. Usually from underneath it just looked opaque white. It's getting into that space that will be difficult.

I've attached a photo of my newly cleaned rings

I clean my diamond ring with a soft electric toothbrush, rotating head. Works a trrat.

After a soaking in warm water/Fairy liquid and a quick buzz in DH's ultrasonic classes cleaner, I go round the fine mounts with a tiny interdental brush, followed by a rinse in cheap gin.

SassitudeandSparkle · 07/10/2018 13:17

I've got an ultrasonic jewellery cleaner, they are not expensive and do make things gleam!

Babybearsporij · 07/10/2018 21:55

I use baby shampoo and a toothbrush on mine. I get right underneath into the setting and give it a really good going over.

JaceLancs · 07/10/2018 22:26

I have an ultrasonic cleaner
Make my own cleaning liquid with water alcohol and washing up liquid

EnidButton · 08/10/2018 00:02

Towntalk jewellery cleaner. Gets my engagement ring really sparkling. Comes with a tiny brush so you can get underneath into the setting part.

Beautiful ring btw. Long the shape.

EnidButton · 08/10/2018 00:02

Long = love!

MerlotMayhem · 14/11/2018 10:24

What's the shape of the diamond called? Love that shape of stone but never know how to describe it!

DontCallMeCharlotte · 14/11/2018 13:43

Brown sauce dissolved in warm water and a toothbrush.

Also works with Tommy K.

Quassia · 14/11/2018 18:48

Merlot, the shape is marquise

LuxuryWoman2018 · 14/11/2018 18:58

My jewellery goes in the dishwasher and it works a treat.
