I quite like a Gudrun Sjoden dress

I'm a fairly casual dresser, but find Gudrun Sjoden too something for me, too boho maybe. For some reason the clothes come up on my FB feed ad fairly regularly and this season there's a dress/tunic that I really like, this one in black.

Tell me truthfully, is this an ok dress or am I at the beginning of a descent into boho old age and will soon be wearing floaty scarves three at a time and long skirts that get caught in my car door. (I'm 51 btw, so old age is coming, very soon.)

Ive never bought any Gudrun but it looks good quality.. TBH am not too sure about that one for me, but I do love this one in the grey/black

SinglePringle · 06/10/2018 17:20

Ah. I really dislike it (clicked on the thread not know the style / label etc). It’s totally against my style. I find that whole look dated and aging.

I’m 49, so not a dissimilar age to you and I’m probably your style opposite - I’ve recently bought high shine red plastic leggings from Top Shop (although I’ve also purchased quite a lot of the Morris & Co range from H&M, along with ‘prairie’ linen dresses from Zara - so I do mix it up!)

There are pockets, possibly in all of their dresses and tunics, which gives them bonus points for me. I was wearing a Seasalt tunic (admittedly bordering on frumpy) a few weeks ago and needed to put my phone down for a minute so tried to put it in one of the pockets, only to find that they were decorative only. Shock

I am a bit bordering on boho to be fair, a lot of Monsoon (plainer end), East (not the very ethnic stuff) which I still miss, bit of Mint Velvet (although I haven't liked much recently), Uniqlo, Wallis (trousers mostly). And I'm very apple-shaped so like things to be loose at the waist.

I haven't had any of the dresses but I own several pieces of knitwear from Gudrun Sjödén and they have been good quality and pretty timeless.

starfishmummy · 06/10/2018 17:33

Well I'm biased as I love Gudrun!! I don't do the layering up bit with the dress over the skirt over the trousers over the leggings whjch I think makes the items more

And pockets. Lovely pockets

Bluntness100 · 06/10/2018 17:42

I really don't like it, I'm sorry, it's quite shapeless and a bit frumpy. I'm the same sort of age at 49. But still wear things like skinny jeans, fitted tops etc.

I have to be honest, I don't really like any of her clothes. I can't get my head round this one.

Harleypuppy · 06/10/2018 17:48

I don't understand it. Is it a short dress with a skirt?
I like the second one better.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 06/10/2018 18:00

That one is particularly odd Bluntness and the oddness of the odd stuff puts me off the plain stuff too.

I'm not a fan.

Bluntness100 · 06/10/2018 18:27

Yeah, I get that op, as it kinda sticks in your mind and merges as one.

I genuinely can't imagine wearing that smock, I'd think I was going to fancy dress, and yours is no where like that bad.

weebarra · 06/10/2018 18:42

I like the idea but at 4ft 10 I'm way too short to carry it off! I have a friend who is a poet and playwright and she looks great in it.

viccat · 06/10/2018 18:50

I quite like some Gudrun clothes, I have a grey checked coat with some small embroidery details I love. That dress though is a bit overpriced for what it is and you could find similar elsewhere I think... it's a bit 1995 or something my 75 year old mother would buy to wear at home!

CountFosco · 06/10/2018 19:31

It's OK, it's not really my style (I'm 47 so similar age) and has the possibility of being frumpy. Will you wear it as a mini with tights and fab shoes/boots? Then it might be good for an apple. But with leggings or jeans underneath not so great.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 06/10/2018 22:05

I hate tights CountFosco, so it'll be with leggings and boots. But my leggings are nice quality and form fitting so not that much bulkier than tights.

I’ve got a couple of Gudrun items in my wardrobe. I have to be very selective about the style - too loose and it makes me look huge, crew necks and no definition also look rubbish on me. The one you linked to wouldn’t work on me but I can see how the right person could style it in a interesting way.

Odiepants · 07/10/2018 08:10

I love it and would definitely wear it with chunky boots and leggings.

Disclaimer though, I'm quite a boho dresser on and off - yesterday was a stripy seasalt tunic with leggings and fly boots. I do vary with more conventional jeans outfits but love something like that dress. I'm a bit younger at 46.

Haahhpy · 10/10/2018 19:03

If you like it you should get it! I wouldn't have said the same about red plastic leggings....

neveradullmoment99 · 11/10/2018 20:08

I have had some Gudrun stuff in the past and the things are good quality. You have to choose selectively though!

Hazardswan · 11/10/2018 20:21

I'm fascinated at the clothes OP thanks for sharing link.

Shockers · 11/10/2018 20:27

In one of the shops in Copenhagen, there is a pre-loved rail at the back. I bought a jumper last year which honestly looks better with every wash! I get so many compliments when I wear it.
