Can my "colours" change??

I was told I was autumn (warm or deep) 10+ years ago.

But I now find that so many warm colours don't suit me, including:

  • mustard
  • rust
  • tomato red
(Black has always washed me out)

The colours that still suit me are:

  • dark red/burgundy
  • dark green
  • dark brown (if I can find it)
  • charcoal

I saw this coat (photo) in Tesco today and it looked awful on me, much to my disappointment.

I have dark and and eyes, can't decide if my veins are blue or green.

I always thought I knew what colours to go for and now I'm stuck!

Can you change your colours?

I’ve wondered this as well, especially as I’m aging. The only colour I’m currently comfortable wearing is navy! Confused

BiscuitDrama · 06/10/2018 17:04

My mum definitely went warm to cool, and I think I am too. I’m currently sticking with ‘deep’ and colours I like.

Doobigetta · 06/10/2018 17:27

I think you can definitely get softer and lighter as you age, I think most people do. Dunno about warmer or cooler. Maybe if you have a tan more or less of the time than before?

WrongSideOfHistory · 06/10/2018 18:16

@mimibunz - yes! Navy is the main neutral colour in my wardrobe (because I can't always find charcoal/brown) but I don't really know if it suits me! Looks better than black though.

My skin tone has always been tricky to pinpoint, going from yellow-toned to pink. But it's definitely more pink than yellow now.

I always look awful in pastels though - that's not changed.

You will always be the season you are , but you can look better in different colors of that season/palette as you age.
There are also different types of each season..for instance light summer, cool/true summer, and soft summer. So you could change sub-categories

Unobtainable · 06/10/2018 21:12

Apparently, as you age, your colouring fades and you can go from say, a warm spring to a pastel spring or a bright spring to a light spring. You cant however change seasons.

Could your original analysis have been wrong?

fatpatsthong · 06/10/2018 21:17

I dunno but I am quite neutral (she really struggled to start me off) and I am finding I can get away with winter tones including black more since I have greyed up hair wise. I am a spring but I think more blue spring than I used to be

WrongSideOfHistory · 06/10/2018 22:42

Originally I was between a deep and warm autumn, she went for warm in the end. But now I can't wear the warmer colours.

I'm not even grey apart from the odd one or two, I think my hair is darker and skin is pinker.

I don’t understand all the seasonal stuff but your skin tone changes with age so it makes sense.

It sounds like you can already tell what colours suit and don’t suit you so personally I would just trust what you see in the mirror rather than pay to have it done again.

PeridotCricket · 07/10/2018 08:41

I read somewhere that you fade as you get older. Eyebrows, lips etc. So wearing lipstick has become more important for me as I look washed out now if I don’t. I think the same with clothes colours. I have to wear deeper colours now or I just look well, faded....

Seniorschoolmum · 07/10/2018 08:43

Yes, I think so. Up until about 48, I couldn’t wear pastels, they made me look ill. Then my skin changed colour, became more rosy tinted and less sallow. Probably part of getting old.

9Greenbottles · 07/10/2018 08:50

The colours that suit you can definitely change over time. Most people's skin tone cools over time as skin becomes thinner, and eye colour softens (talking decades rather than a year or two). If you dye your hair or let it go grey, the overall combination alters and you should reconsider whether a colour suits you.
