Navy worn with black... can it work?

I know the D of S has worn this and (may just be me) I quite like it as a look. But then I'm utterly wedded to both colours and love my dark neutrals!

Just wondering whether a black pencil skirt with a dark navy silky blouse would work. Maybe contrasting (bright?) shoes with it. Or just plan black shoes, really just wondering what people think about navy and black together and if it's ineffably chic or a total no-no!

I wear black and navy - never seen why people think it looks bad. Go for it - outfit sounds lovely!

JessiCake · 03/10/2018 14:00

Thanks Nyon!

Would you put bright shoes (I have some amazing fuchsia pink ones...) with that outfit (for a special occasion obv) or just go plain black or even nude?

I think it looks good and have always worn it. Go for it

I've got lots of black and lots of navy in my wardrobe. Thank you for giving me the courage to try combining them! I've always though it was a no-no but I'll give it a whirl.

MarshaBradyo · 03/10/2018 23:00

Yes it can but you don’t need bright shoes

Pared back is good

Movin · 04/10/2018 08:59

Love black and navy - wouldn't do the shoes tho.
But I'm pared back in my approach, maybe a neutral or pony skin ?!
Do what ever makes you feel fab !

I love black and navy together BUT the black and navy have to be pretty good quality fabrics and not at all faded or it doesn't look great. A bobbly washed out navy jumper and faded black jeans would be awful but a pencil skirt and blouse combo would be amazing.

2gorgeousboys · 04/10/2018 10:37

I love black and navy together and actually have a couple of navy jackets with black trim that are good for pulling the separates together.

Hah! I feel so personally attacked by this Blush Have you been hiding in my wardrobe?

I've always ignored this fashion rule because it didn't make sense to me. Perhaps you just need to make sure the navy is at the bluer end of navy (iykwim) so it doesn't look like two mismatching shades of black from a distance.

DaphneduM · 04/10/2018 12:24

Last season I bought a coat from Mulberry outlet - black wool with navy satin lapels and belt. So, in Mulberry world, yes black and blue does work!!!! I wear it with either navy patent brogues or black patent boots and dark denim jeans.

BrightonGallery7 · 04/10/2018 12:36

Navy and black do pair together very well. I never wear bobbled knitwear. Just sayin.

Thanks v much everyone!

Glad ot hear others think it's about qualoty and texture plus shade of navy as this is what I'm thinking too.

Pencil skirt in question is beautiful quality black lace (sounds trashy but it's not, it's beautiful and was v pricey several years ago when I had spare cash before kids!) and blouse I've just ordered isn't actually silk but is crepe de chine and good quality/obviously fancy. It's definitely on the bluer end of the navy spectrum as I get the point totally about it otherwise looking like mismatched black. But I will have to see when I actually get it and put it next to the skirt.

I think maybe it's about it looking like a deliberately and thoughtfully chosen combination as opposed to just bunging random dark colours together?

I'm definitely right off the hot pink shoes idea and am thinking if the outfit works I will wear it with some very nice extremely dark-grey (almost black) satin point-toe courts.

I also have a lovely dark-grey leather clutch.

Sorry to be boring but tights-wise, what might you do? It's for a smart event in early November but will be almost entirely indoors so don't need to prioritise warmth iyswim. I really love a micro-fishnet as I have embarrassingly scrawny calves (think Meghan Markle but sadly without her looks elsewhere!) and the fishnet seems to add a bit of much-needed bulk whereas normal fine-denier black tights make my calves and ankles look like twigs. I COULD go bare-legged if I add a light fake tan (I have one I like that isn't in-your-face) or a make-up lotion on my legs. Do micro-fishnets sound OK, though? It's not a work or corporate event so I don't have to worry about people thinking they're inappropriate! Plus the rest of the outfit is on the demure side (and I'm a scrawny woman in my early 40s who will be there with my child so I don't think my outfit is going to be screaming LOOK AT ME I'M SO SEXY Grin or anything)!

It sounds very stylish and pared back, but I think you might need something a bit controversial (probably small) to stop it looking too 'safe'. A funky accessory, maybe something metallic?

Movin · 05/10/2018 04:52

Tan lightly - do not under and circumstances wear fishnets, esp with lace. Horribly ageing ...... sorry !

Try not to have too many textures, lace, crep, leather, satin ....... all sounds a bit too much imo.

verite · 05/10/2018 06:35

I think navy and black can work. I have a lovely black and navy pencil skirt which I wear with a black camisole and navy silk cardigan. However I don’t think dark grey shoes would go as it adds another almost matching but not quite colour. I would either go for black/navy/neutral shoe.

mimibunz · 05/10/2018 06:40

I agree with others that the fabrics must be high quality, otherwise it can look like you got dressed in the dark.
