Long hair over 40

I've always quite liked having long messy hair but now I'm in my 40s almost every friend seems to have cut theirs short. Is it weird to keep it long long? It's always looked a bit like Merida but suddenly it looks less boho and more scraggly witch. What do you think of below the boob length hair on 40s women?

There's no one size fits all, being 40 doesn't mean you automatically suit short hair. My hair is thick and curly and the length definitely holds it down and makes the curl easier to manage. I'm 47 and it's now completely silver, I do have regular trims and condition it well. I also have quite a round face, so the length (currently shoulder length, as I've been growing out the dye) is flattering on my face. It was previously bra strap length when dyed, so I'm growing it as long as I feel like it.

stoopid article because shorter hair still blows in your face.

Sitranced · 04/10/2018 19:42

I'm not quite in my 40's yet but I've spent my entire 20's and early 30's with short hair or a pixie due to loads of breakage caused by dye trying to cover my greys which I've had since I was a teenager. Now I've let the grey grow out my hair is so much of a better condition I can finally start growing it out passed my ears and I want long silver hair like Annikavonholdt from Instagram.

I don't think it's about age either - I've got short hair because I know that it genuinely suits me. I've flitted between long and short since being 13 and everyone always says how much better I look with short hair. But, it has absolutely nothing to do with age.
With regards to the awful 'speak to a manager haircut' business, I also agree with Navigator - regardless of the hairstyle, why on earth are we ridiculing middle-aged women simply for being assertive?

Don't know how to scrub my face out Blush but nothing to hide!

40 and long hair with fringe. Have experimented having no fringe and it's just not me. My hair has never been healthier.

My hair went really thin and straggly about 10 years ago shortly after I was 30. I had blood tests but the doctor didn't find an obvious problem and concluded it just happens to some women. I previously had really thick hair that was great for styling but after it thinned you could see my scalp and up do's just looked silly. So I had it cut. It did help but I wasn't happy with my hair really. It's thickened quite a lot over the last year or so, so I'm growing it again but not sure what to do with it. I don't want a safe mumsy style but nor do I want to come over as having a mid life crisis, and I can't have extreme hair styles for work.

My hair is highlighted & just on my shoulders, I'm actually trying hard to grow it & im 42.

In 2010 / 2011 my hair fell out at the front due to epilepsy meds. I had to wear bandanas or scarves, then I tried wigs.

Well, of course I went for the most glamorous long haired glossy wig I could find & it felt amazing! People who hadn't seen me for a while thought I'd got extensions.
I had a lot of compliments & men treated me differently (shallow that they are).

Soon my hair began to grow back so I stopped wearing the wig but I would love to get the confidence from my real hair that the wig gave me.

After 7 years!! the sides of my hair is just past my ears so I'm having the back blunt cut while the rest catches up. I have to be careful how I style it as I don't want the mullet effect!!

I have had critical comments on how thin it is when it's tied back for work, nasty.

I really would love to have nice thick shiny hair but I guess we all want what we can't have.

tierraJ · 05/10/2018 11:51

Oh yes & thanks to other meds I have anaemia so I do take iron tablets & have a sympathetic gp.

tierraJ Flowers. How horrible some people are.

I am 41 and had high quality bonded extensions fitted for my wedding at 39. I LOVED having long hair. Extensions get a bad rep but done properly they are easy to maintain and look really natural. You get what you pay for. Only removed them after 2 years due to cost of maintenance but now have natural chin length wavy bob and love it

Lady i worked with was 55 with long hair but she never trimmed it so it looked straggly and poor condition. She was obsessed with only having 2mm cut off. I think regardless of length you have to trim and keep any hair length neat if you want it to look healthy.

Wear it however you want. But be selfish not sensible. My sis in law lost her hair to chemo this year. Hair impacts confidence massively. Don't be guided by media or age. Everyone is different. If it looks good and makes you happy then keep it!

ferrier · 08/10/2018 08:15

Long hair. No fringe. Over 50. Obviously no hope for me!

KittyB52 · 08/10/2018 08:23

I am 45 with bra strap length hair. Sadly it is very fine and thinning slightly thanks to anaemia/being peri-menopausal and my GP isn't helping with that. I've also gone a bit jowly and need a fringe due to fireheadness. I rarely wear my hair down as it's a faff so should get it cut but it's easier to just clip it up first thing.
