I have a big bday coming up and want to treat myself to some nice make up. I have spent the last 7 yrs in a sleep deprived rut but I have started back at work, have lost 3 of the 5 st I need to lose and am finally finding myself again.

Pre kids I usually wore some make up everyday and made an effort with clothes and hair but was never full on glam. Since having the 3 dc I just haven't had it in me to make the time. Most if my make up is cheap and probably 8 yrs old.

So I was thinking of a lesson at mac to remind me and then starting again. I have bad acne scars and oily skin. I don't want to look too made up, just fresh and less tired.

Any advice? Its a big investment and I want to get it right!

Getting a session at Mac sounds good. You can decide if it suits you or not. I used Clinique foundations at a point when my skin was breaking out and was oily. I now use maybelline, L'Oréal and Mac for special occasions. The drug store brands seem to work as well as the high end. If you have a yellow under stone the cheaper ones may look a bit ashy. L'Oréal mascara is a staple for me. NYX lipsticks are as good as Mac. Good luck Smile

Personally I would choose Bobbi Brown over Mac for a more natural look . You can book ‘ How to ‘. sessions with them and I think one is actually about looking less tired .
They do it in our local John Lewis .

Thx will check out john lewis.

I'd definitely go and speak to the people at the Clinique counter.

Also, is it's feasible, it would be really useful to book in with an independent make up artist who will be able to advise you what works for you without pushing a particular brand.

User5trillion · 30/09/2018 18:23

I used to use clinque back in the day, their foundation was excellent, I had forgotten about them, thanks. Will have a look for a make up artist, thankyou

Happy early birthday and congratulations on your hard work losing weight!

To cover the scars on your face I suggest dermablend foundation by Vichy, but only use it on the actual scars. I have found that my foundation looks more natural when I only use it on the areas that really need to be covered, and I blend well. I highly suggest checking out Lisa Eldridge on Youtube (famous makeup artist and director of Lancome), she has a great video on how to cover scars and spots and in general, all of her makeup videos are great and informative.

I love 5 Couleurs Couture Eyeshadow Palette by Dior because the shadow stays on all day, the formula is amazing because the shadow is soft but highly pigmented. This would make a great birthday present to yourself. I also really love Dior Lip Glow in Raspberry because it moisturises well, provides a natural wash of colour and my lips feel soft and supple now that I use it.

For mascara, I use a high street brand (whichever is on offer and looks good), for blush I like Lancome's formulation and staying power but I have used high street brands that I like as well and for makeup brushes, I really like Real Techniques.

User5trillion · 30/09/2018 19:08

I have derma blend, as recommended on here, its yrs old but covers everything, amazing stuff- probably should replace it. Off to google all your suggestions, thanks for such a detailed reply, its given me loads to think about.

Now I am not young and beautiful I need to work harder at it. I am fed up of looking in the mirror and seeing someone who looks like they have given up.

Just had a new hair cut and colour and feel amazing. Fitting into my old clothes is helping too. Recently started getting my brows tinted and shaped and that has helped.

Now dc are not so demanding of my time I am trying to look a bit more polished so I dont cringe everytime I bump into someone or have to have my photo taken. Only now I am getting out of my rut, did I realise how much it was affecting me.

I second going to Bobbi Brown - book online. Also could someone treat you to a Beauty Pie membership. Good value and I highly recommend their brushes and much else besides.

User5trillion · 30/09/2018 19:48

Just booked a bobbi brown consultation for friday, really excited. Will update later.

I feel a bit silly as getting so upset about something as silly as my appearance but it was getting to me. Feel more hopeful now.

Bobbi brown is no good for people who are acne prone, it's not really good for anyone to be honest it has lavender in it which causes spots.

MAC studio fix fluid would be good for you if you have oily skin, it'll make your skin look matte.

I use Georgio Armani foundation as I have dry patches on my skin which only this foundation so far hasn't left me looking like a patchy mess, I wouldn't recommend it if you're really oily though because it has an oily finish.

rosewater09 · 01/10/2018 00:14

Feelings: Bobby Brown eye makeup might work well for her though? She can probably gain some advice on how to apply makeup from their team and then go from there.

I am in a very similar climbing out of rut position!!

I went to Bobbi Brown a couple of weeks ago, they have one that is something like 'how to put makeup on when you only have 5 mins in the morning' It was £30 redeemable against products.....

The positives- I have foundation that is the right colour for my face (a personal first for me, I believe, despite many runs ins with estee lauder clinique etc...I have been using lily lolo for about 4 years just because its kind of not orange like every liquid foundation I've ever been sold!) and the 3 foundation things they sold me -foundation stick/eye corrector/concealer stick do make a big difference to my appearance and it takes me about 3 mins.

The negative- bloody hell they train those girls to sell. I found it quite hard work tbh. (I haven't bought any makeup in about 5 years since pre dc except for superdrug etc, so perhaps if you are a veteran of the higher end stands it is easier to repel!)

They really tried to push a lot of skincare. You need this product to help the foundation sit nicely on your skin, this lipstick needs a primer first etc. On and bloody on. And loads of stuff I couldn't possibly do in a 5 minute morning routine but she insisted on showing me as 'I really want you to see how good it looks' etc.

In the end I bought about 20% of what she showed me, which cost £170. I actually really do like the products I bought and they look good but I found it very very pushy to buy a lot more which was awkward, and not especially easy when you are buying stuff as you have lost your confidence a bit. So be warned!

Feelings · 01/10/2018 13:53

rosewater09 I do actually like Bobbi Brown makeup, I just wouldn't recommend the foundation. I've got lots of their bits which are theirs and I like them. I'm just suggesting what might work better foundation wise.

rosewater09 · 02/10/2018 10:30

Feelings: I understand, I hope I didn't come off as rude because that wasn't my intention!

User5trillion · 02/10/2018 17:56

I am determined not to buy yet! I just want to have a make over and then save. I am not usually a high end make up buyer but am quite good at saying no! I am really looking forwards to it and knowing how long I hang on to my make up I want to make the right choice. Thanks for all your help.

Buy some Chanel Soleil de Tan. It's about £40 but lasts FOREVER and it's like a little bit of creamy sunshine in a tub, it's magic stuff. Beautiful over foundation or just over moisturiser to make you look slightly more alive in a morning.

LadyLapsang · 02/10/2018 20:59

I would buy something if you are having a makeover, especially if it is redeemed off the price. You don't, however, need to spend £170 unless you want to.

User5trillion · 02/10/2018 21:17

The make over is free and I will probably buy something just don't want to buy everything all at once. I struggle with foundation so am keen to get the right colour. No clue about concealer. My foundation always ends up a cakey, greasy mess by lunchtime so.I need to time test it. Also really keen to find a lipstick that doesn't make my lips peel.

Haven't read full thread so dont know if she's been mentioned already, but definitely check out Lisa Eldridge on You Tube, she's a top makeup artist and has lots of vids covering the basics and lots of looks. Great product recs according to skintype.

Elledorado · 02/10/2018 23:16

I would get nars liquid bronzer over the chanel. I find the chanel hard to apply over foundation. Do you still have acne prone skin? If so make sure you get big samples so you can try foundations over a couple of days. The studio fix mentioned above is notorious for causing acne.

I would also visit a space nk for some alternative high end brands.

User5trillion · 05/10/2018 13:55

So I am back and nearly £100 lighter! Whoever said they could sell, they were right! I didn't buy any make up, I am not overly impressed with the foundation now its hard a chance to settle. I did like the blusher and bronzer she used.

I did buy some skin care stuff and she did give a good sales pitch, hopefully it will live up to her claims.

I will probably book a make up lesson at a later stage to learn how to get a polished look. Will need to save first as its pricey stuff when you are used to buying boots no 7 range!
