Why do I always end up with a bob when I ask for sonething different?!

Had enough of my hair so booked an appt for today to have a good couple of inches of the back. I don’t have much time in the mornings to do it and it was just looking a mess for work.
I took lots of pictures with me today of the kind of looks I like. I can safely say I look like none of them. I have instead got myself another bog standard boring as hell bob with 3 strands as a fringe. I wanted a change and wanted to cover my lined forehead but she didn’t seem keen on doing it. I’ve had a fringe before so I was happy to do it.

Feeling fed up and dull. I spent a lot of money today and just don’t feel I was really listened to. She implied that no one is ever going to really look like the pictures I had. I wonder if she just gives everyone the bog standard bob!

I’ve been feeling rubbish about my appearance lately and just wanted to treat myself and have a new look but I feel like a frump.

Is it the blonde that's been going orange, would a purple shampoo help keep the tint looking good? I used to use them when I was blonde all over. I don't know how they work when it's highlights with brown main colours. Maybe someone can advise here?

But seriously, do go back and ask if they can do anything, at least to cut in a fringe you actually like?

Honey1975 · 29/09/2018 19:50

This is one of the styles I like and she said it wouldn’t work but I thought her hair looked thick and wavy like mine.

Op, I feel your pain! Ive got very thick curly hair & almost every time I end up with a bib they blow dry straight. I have t had my hair cut for 18 months, the last time was so bad I actually refused to pay. I know I’m starting to look like a wild woman but I just can’t face yet another crap time at the hairdressers. I’d be interested to hear how anyone actually gets a hairdresser to listen!

Honey1975 · 29/09/2018 20:00

Nancy exactly! She has blow dried it straight and then used straighteners. I told her I have very little time for styling in the morning but she just said well you’ll need to spend time if you want it to look half decent.

My hair naturally waves and if I leave it to dry it has that natural tousled look but it needs the right shape cut otherwise it looks a bit mullet like!

Try the college for a wash & b.dry first or a trim in a couple of weeks, & have a chat about your next appt.

nancy75 · 29/09/2018 20:03

Honey the straighteners have been the downfall of hairdressers for me. Years ago my hair used to be cut properly because they couldn’t dry it straight, it won’t go with just a hairdryer. Now they have super heat straightens it’s a bob & extreme ironing! I hate flat hair but they won’t listen Angry

Honey1975 · 29/09/2018 20:08

This is similar to how my would go if I left it to dry naturally. But what sort of cut is this?

Was it Toni & Guy, OP? I’ve had the exact same problem recently there - I took in several photos (of a long inverted bob) and they gave me a shaggy layered thing with a fringe instead. When I went to another hairdresser in tears (and €90 lighter), she said that they basically have a set of hairstyles of the month that they do and no matter what you ask for, you’ll basically get whichever one of their set hairstyles is “closest”.

anunseemlylovefordustin · 29/09/2018 20:10

No advice, but lots of solidarity! I have fine straight hair, and every hairdresser I've been to for the last few years has straightened it! I don't know whether they're over-reliant on straighteners now, but I hate it. My last haircut also means I've ended up with a mid length boring bob, with too sparse a fringe.

LE SIGH

GirlInTheDirtyShirt · 29/09/2018 20:11

Cross-post - that’s exactly the cut I asked for! It’s a blunt slightly inverted bob (ie it’s a bit longer at the front than at the back)

Honey1975 · 29/09/2018 20:12

Nancy i hate it when they straighten it too. Looks lank and not how my hair naturally is. Also I haven’t got bloody time every day to blow dry it and then straighten it all with a job to get to and two kids to get to school!
I told her that but she still decided to give me a bob that needs blow drying and straightening.

Hmm, maybe the alternative is to look for a hairdresser that specialises in curly hair? Have a Google in your area for that too?

There's one in Plymouth that a friend (with very tight curls) swears by if anyone is down this direction: cuttinggardenhair.co.uk/

Honey1975 · 29/09/2018 20:15

Girlinthedirtyshirt are you pleased with yours? Did it turn out like this picture?

That last one you posted is what I have, it's a longish bob. Not much longer at the front than the back but a bit.

I feel like hairdressers don't like telling people they can't look like the photos. The lady who did my wedding hair said so many people want Michelle Keegan hair but most people don't have enough hair for it and it depends on your hair type as to if it holds well or not. My hair is quite fine so I know any styles that look big probably won't on me. One of my friends asked for the same haircut as me and was really cross that when hers was done it looked so different (few inches off and a fringe). Whilst my hair is thin it allows for quite a nice solid fringe, but her hair is a bit wispier and a fringe on her is always split into a few different sections. Equally, her hair curls beautifully and mine drops them in an instant without half a tin of hairspray Confused

hugoagogo · 29/09/2018 20:28

I find I have to be very firm with hairdressers.
I tell them exactly how much I want cut off.
If they do it wrong I tell them straight away and get them to adjust it.
Saying that it still some times go wrong.
I never let them straighten it.
Communication is the hardest bit.

autumnpie · 29/09/2018 20:43

When I read your message and some of the replies, I thought this sounded so like me. I keep being given a bob as well and, like you, have taken in photos of similar hairstyles but still been given a bob. In my case I wanted a long pixie look.

One thing that I can maybe help with though is the hair going orange. I have brown hair and am trying to cover the greys. With a previous hairdresser she changed the hair dye she was using and the new dye always kept going orange. When I asked her about it she said they all do. However I then eventually moved hairdressers and after trying many, I found one I liked and the dye he uses means my hair hasn't gone orange since. Most other hairdressers seemed to use a dye that goes orange. Unfortunately I can't remember what type he uses. Think it's L'Oreal but can't remember.

I am also in agreement with all of you who find the hairdressers insist on using straighteners. Again, this used to always happen to me, even though my hair is fine and I ended up looking very strange. I think they do it for speed and it requires less expertise. Luckily my current hairdresser listened and never tries to use them on me - I just need to tackle the bob issue now Smile

I hope that you manage to find a hairdresser that will help you find the style you would like.

MaisyPops · 29/09/2018 20:49

I told her I have very little time for styling in the morning but she just said well you’ll need to spend time if you want it to look half decent.
The thing is that's quite true with shorter hair.
My hairdresser was saying the same thing when I had shorter hair. Most photos of short hair inspiration are heavily styled even though they look effortless.

BeeMyBaby · 29/09/2018 21:51

@Honey1975 they prefer shorter styles as there are less people that are willing to have them so they need more models for that, but afaik they did all styles as my friend with longer hair got hers done too (not cut short). Maybe you could google in your area if there are any hair academies attached to the more expensive hair dressers?
