Are acrylic nails a stupid idea?

I can't stop biting my nails - they look shit. I don't bite them when they're fake but I've not had them done in about 7 years.

I have a toddler and can not be arsed with maintenance- I just want something that looks smart for work and takes almost no time.

Are fake nails a daft idea?

I am a nail biter and am pretty sure I always will be. I had acrylic nails for the first time about 6 years ago and to be honest I haven't looked back.

I get infills about every 3 weeks and it costs about £30 a time with shellac but i wouldn't be without them now. I'm sure my nails are totally ruined underneath but this is the best they have ever looked and the bonus is they are pretty much bomb proof. It's an indulgence but only takes about 30-45 mins each time.

Oh I won't go every 3 weeks, I know I won't. Urggh, my nails just look so scruffy!

You need to go regularly to have infills other wise they can snap and rip your nail, it bloody hurts 😫

Ah bugger - well that's that idea off the table then.

Thanks 👍🏼

Properly applied & removed they wont damage nails. But you need them maintaining or bacteria can get in and cause your nail to go green.

Proper cotton gloves might help, you need something to break the hand to mouth action your minds used to.

Yes bad idea

AmperoBlue · 29/09/2018 22:26

You definitely can stop biting your nails. Probably the wrong time of year now because they grow faster in the summer but lots of us manage it in the end.
Nail biting is a sign of a perfectionist apparently - perhaps that why it's easier later in life.
I gave up biting a few times but they would snag and then I'd nibble to even them up and back to square one.I noticed in Real Housewivies how nice their short dark nails looked. I painted mine a dark midnight blue last winter. Instead of growing them I kept them super short so I wasn't tempted or they snag. Now all but one nail have stopped being bitten.

averageisgood · 29/09/2018 22:53

I keep my nails short and black/blue/dark red. I think acrylics can look good, but only the expensive, done well types. If you're going to get them done, go somewhere with a good reputation and be prepared to pay more.

Op are you me? I am ashamed of my bitten nails have stopped a few years ago but they are always very short and there’s always a couple that I pick and nibble at so usually have a couple of bad looking ones, I am a nurse so never been able to have false nails/nail varnish but have just began a new non clinical role so I can now! I had them done last week had them short and a natural look gel polish, they look really nice although I have found myself trying to pick at/bite them Blush
I am hoping that in a few weeks I will be able to have them off and my nails will have grown underneath? And that somehow I will magically stop being a nail biter!

sourpatchkid · 29/09/2018 23:32

GrinGrin I'm definitely not a perfectionist!

Am now considering gel nail polish instead ..

Get shellac/gel polish - with a manicure you can have them quite short and the manicure grows out from the bottom so you'd be less tempted to bite.

I've been having them done every 3 weeks or so and they look a bit sloppy when they start growing out but rarely chip and feel too thick to nibble on!

happymummy12345 · 29/09/2018 23:54

I used to have acrylics with extensions, quite long, my lovely nail lady suggested growing my own nails out, so for 6 months I did. I now have my own nails. I had my own with shellac for 2 months but because of how long I have even my own nails, and with a toddler, one broke slightly. So I opted to have an acrylic overlay on my natural nails, so they are stronger.
I love long nails so I'm biased.
