Tailored wool coat that’s seriously warm?

The recent winter coats thread has reminded me that my much loved wool and cashmere work coat from a top end diffusion line, which I spent an arm and a leg on in a 20th century January sale is reaching the end of its life. Sad

I have other tailored wool coats for work, which are fine for November, December, March, but they’re a bit lightweight and have nylon/polyester in with the wool. For the times when it’s properly cold I want a seriously warm coat that will stop me from freezing to death in the forced march through the winds whistling over London Bridge but still look really smart over a work suit.

Can anyone suggest brands that might fit the bill without costing four figures? Or is this one of those things where the only answer would be to spend terrifying sums of money and I just have to live with my increasingly threadbare old darling?

I've got a Chester style wool coat that I wore with a uniqlo ultra light down jacket under during the winter a couple years ago. That could work?

EvilRingahBitch · 28/09/2018 18:14

Yes that solution has occurred to me
Older, because I do have a lightweight down thing, but I’d be wearing a tailored wool jacket under the coat so a down jacket as well would be tricky.

If you’re thinking Maxmara, it’s not as good quality as it used to be, and I would never pay its full price now. Happily did so in the past, and got my money’s worth too, but now Massimo Dutti has started copying its cuts and the signature stitching, I’m unlikely to invest.

Hobbs and Jaeger still do pure wool coats, and I second the PP who said layer with a Uniqlo coat for added warmth. Unfortunately I found Uniqlo coats gave me static shocks!

olderthanyouthink · 28/09/2018 18:27

Ah, I wore pretty casual stuff underneath... maybe a sleeveless down jacket? Under your tailored jacket?

plumsnet · 28/09/2018 18:29

Or layer with a cashmere jumper or Heat Tech tops underneath your suit jacket?

PiperPublickOccurrences · 28/09/2018 18:34

I have a 100% wool Hobbs one which is tailored, smart and very warm. It's like this one, but the pockets are different.

(And mine was BNWT from Cancer Research for £20. Full ticket price £270).

If you can afford it go to Hobbs, you won't regret it

EvilRingahBitch · 28/09/2018 18:47

I've got a bunch of Hobbs clothes including one very warm tweed jacket but not a coat - I'll give them a look, thanks.

Sleeveless Uniqlo gilet under suit jacket might be a goer actually: that's a clever idea thanks Older. Unlike a heattech base layer I could take it off easily at my desk and at 30 quid its a tenth of the price of the Hobbs Tilda coat (although theres 20% off).

Or thermal underwear, but that's a problem in a heated office

Missingstreetlife · 28/09/2018 19:04

Wear a hat, gloves and keep your feet warm, that's where the heat goes (had outdoor job, it makes a difference)

CountFosco · 28/09/2018 20:34

Uniqlo look good or Arket are all pure wool so might be good.

MoltonSilver · 28/09/2018 20:36

Does it have to be a wool coat? Something wind and waterproof might do a better job.

lisam78 · 28/09/2018 21:57

I could have written this post myself! High street coats I have looked at have had very low wool content, for a not so low price. Warehouse had a lovely coat - 90 quid and 100% polyester! Countfosco- love the uniqlo coat, I must have missed that when scrolling through different sites. I'm sorely tempted!

My Marella coat is 100% wool and a decent weight, got it on sale in House of Fraser a few years ago but John Lewis appear to stock the brand.

And ten years ago I got the most amazing structured and heavy wool coat from Reiss. Had a look and this one is 100% wool although I like my winter coats midi length.
