Spanish style baby clothes

I've just come back from Spain and have been mulling over a business idea.

I've seen lots of gorgeous Spanish baby clothes, I know that this particular style is either a marmite, love it or hate it, but I know there is very few places in the UK selling a wide range of this type of clothing.

My friend who does my nails is from a travelling background thinks it would be popular - and says lots of her friends & family would buy it as it's quite traditional in her culture to dress babies in this style.

I'd be interested to hear if people buy it online or go to Spain to buy? And if they'd like a Spanish baby boutique?

Please no rude comments, if it's not your taste that's fine but no need to make rude comments Smile

Not my taste but I expect some people would buy it. You'd need to do proper market research though before you embark on something. Would you sell in a store or online?

Bellabutterfly2016 · 28/09/2018 12:25

I'd like to open a boutique and I'd do online sales too.

Would it be cost effective? I live in Spain and those kinds of clothes are quite expensive and I think kids clothes are generally cheaper in the UK. Would you make a profit?

Bellabutterfly2016 · 28/09/2018 12:42

Yes they're expensive but so is a party dress from jo jo mama bebe or boden.

I'm guessing it's like anything, if people like them and want to buy them, they will and if they think they're too expensive they won't.

My background originally was a textiles/fashion degree I might even have a go at making some to order if they prove popular.

What are Spanish style baby clothes and why do I seem to be the only person who doesn't immediately know what this means? Confused Grin

trevormcdonald · 28/09/2018 12:52

I'm afraid I have no idea either - can we have a couple of pictures for examples please?

golondrina · 28/09/2018 13:51

Like this: www.gocco.es/primera-puesta like the kind of thing price George and Princess charlotte wear on official engagements, looks quite 1950s.
A lot of the clothes they wear are Spanish brands (the nanny is Spanish).

I would say that it's actually quite easy to get hold of in the uk already, maybe you could find some lesser known brands and sell those. Traditional clothing is quite fashionable at the moment so it's well worth giving it a go x

Quite a few of these where i live dotted around Teesside. Have branched out into selling spannish dolls and prams too. They seem to do well. I love some stuff but some stuff is a bit too much for my tastes.

My DM loves it!

FaceLikeAPairOfTits · 28/09/2018 14:00

This seems to be a UK stockist of similar clothes to the ones golondrina linked to.

CountessVonBoobs · 28/09/2018 14:01

I only took a quick look, but it didn't look that different to what's available here to me.

That said, this is a very hard market to make money in - how do you envision offering something compelling enough to make a profit? If you buy from the Spanish boutiques and re-sell, you'll have to charge a mark-up plus customs charges, why would people pay that rather than order from Spain? You'd have to be ordering in bulk to have the clout to buy wholesale, how would you afford that? If you're going to make up stuff yourself, how will you persuade people to pay what that costs when it's inevitably going to be more than buying from a Spanish site?

The running costs for a physical boutique are going to be big. You would have to be in a location where there was a big demand for this specific look from people who had both the means and willingness to pay. It often takes years to build enough of a market to run a physical shop.

DarlingNikita · 28/09/2018 14:06

They're quite nice, but do places like Boden not do kids' stuff that's similar already?

Bellabutterfly2016 · 28/09/2018 14:07

I'd be buying wholesale or making the clothes myself to order and my aim would be to start big and build on it. I've looked at suitable retail units and I'm just researching now to establish interest etc..

It's a tough time for a businesses especially retailers but I'm keen to try.

I'm going to order some samples and have a bit of an open evening see how I go.

I'm not exactly sure what style you are referring to but I do know that Mayoral is a large Spanish children's clothing brand that is all over the UK...not sure if it is slightly different style to what you mean.

Slatternsdelight · 28/09/2018 14:16

Tbh there's quite a number of retailers in the south east-especially Kent and Essex that sell this kind of style
I think you'd probably be taking on a fair amount of risk given this market is already well established

CountessVonBoobs · 28/09/2018 14:52

Are you in retail or clothing sales already, though? How much start-up capital do you have?

You are going to need a very robust business plan and set of numbers, plus a compelling answer to the question "why would people buy this from me?" And I just don't see that there is money on the table in this particular market.
