Good shampoo for chlorine drenched hair

My DD is a competitive swimmer, spends 15+ hrs in the pool a week. Her school friends change hair colour frequently, and like a sheep she wanted blonde dip dye, but the hairdresser did a strand test and the chlorine meant the hair went orange!

I really don't want this to be the thing which makes her resent her swimming for the sacrifices she has to make. So does anyone know a good shampoo or post-wash treatment product which successfully strips off the chlorine?

Worryingly the hairdresser couldn't recommend anything but I suppose people who aren't regular swimmers wouldn't need to know!

Does she wear a cap? I have bleached blonde hair and I wear a cap to protect it.

Boots used to do a swim and sun one that was supposed to be good for swimmers

Does dd have dark hair. If i bleached mine it would go orange.

Bleach london have some dark colours you dont have to use on prelightened hair. Bleaching and competive swimming dont mix well.

there's a selection here

When I used to swim regularly, I always put Philip Kingsley's Swimcap on my hair before swimming. I had/have (expensive!) blonde highlights and never had any problems at all.

I have used triswim (red packaging) and aqua guard (blue packaging) from Amazon. I also use a pre swim conditioner, rub it into my hair before swimming- also from Amazon. I have heavily dyed hair and my hairdresser has said she hasn’t noticed any chlorine damage. She may need to leave her hair for a while to ensure it’s recovered a bit before dying it.

Boots swim & gym.

I use the Boots Swim and Gym 3 in 1 shampoo and its really good, but have also used Anovia swim shampoo which certainly gets rid of all the chlorine smell.
She could also try applying that Phillip Kingsley Swimcap stuff before swimming (and still wearing a tight swim hat obv) to protect her hair. Pricey though alas

MissLadyM · 26/09/2018 20:52

Philip Kingsley swim cap on damp hair plus an actual hat and never had colour fade or smell on my red hair. It isn't cheap but I hate the Boots stuff

Thanks all for the great recommendations. I'll buy everything and see how we get on.

She does wear a normal swimming cap for training but it doesn't seem to be completely water tight. Plus she swims occasionally for pleasure and on holiday, and doesn't wear a cap then because she doesn't want to look different to her friends!

You can strip the chlorine off by washing her hair with washing up liquid. She needs to be very careful to not get it in her eyes when washing because it's not pH balanced but it works fantastically.
