Hi,

I'm a tall size 10, with long legs, curves/hips, but with a high waiste with a small bum and straight thighs. I have broad shoulders too, so I just need balancing out.

I was looking at swim dresses, but a lot of people were saying they were frumpy and make you look bigger, add volume etc, but I want volume, around my bottom half anyway, as I say, to balance me out.

I look ok in a bikini, but I just want to feel comfortable and not worry about my boyish bum.

Any suggestions?

Grin Inverted triangle is the rarest body type for a woman according to House of Colour. I feel your pain.

Anyway, back to swimwear. To disguise broad shoulders, I'd suggest a one-shoulder swimsuit as the line takes your eye down instead of across; the same applies to a bikini. A print is also a good idea as this will make your bottom look more curvy.

You could also buy bikini bottoms with a frill to add volume, or you could embrace your sporty figure and go all out in a sporty style with a low front and high legs.

Thanks, Unobtainable. Great tips!

I have that body shape and it’s so hard to dress. I bought a bikini from Matthew William son that tied up the sides and I bought a swimming costume that did the same too - it seems to draw attention to your body half and make it look more in proportion.

Have you bought any nice dresses or tops that work lately? Perhaps I need to start a thread??

I have much broader shoulders than hips and I swear by halterneck swimwear, despite it being one of those styles that people with broad shoulders are usually told to avoid.

I bought this bikini earlier in the year and love it - it’s really flattering and the wide halterneck balances out my shoulders. It was eyewateringly expensive, but worth it for the confidence it’s given me on the beach. Worth saying I have really small boobs (30DD) so it fits all sizes! I’m not really in the habit of posting photos of me in a bikini to strangers online, but I can if you’d like!

Dis, yes, I had a couple of bikinis that tied at the side, for that reason. I think I was hoping to be more covered now, if possible. I'm not overweight, but not very toned.

Yp, I always found the same actually. It does emphasise your shoulders, but it doesn't make them look bigger. I actually like my shoulders, I just wish I had the bottom half to balance me out.

Actually, the last bikini I wore was a tie at the side (bottoms) and halter top, so a combination of the two suggestions! Grin

So no to swim dress?...

Oh and if you wouldn't mind posting a pic, that would be great! Be good to see if we're the same shape. It might be worth splurging.

Yes I like halters too as they showcase the shoulders. Avoid string straps though as the contrast between the solid shoulders and thin string is too great. A 1” strap is perfect or even half an inch.

Dont get a swim skirt, Ive never seen one that looks nice.

I think this looks amazing.

This looks great too. The bottoms broaden the hips while the halter strsps draw the eye upwards.
