Mumofmonsters...if you want to email me your address to [email protected].

My friend runs a cosmetics website and I'm sure I could get you something as a freebie.

NineUnlikelyTales · 11/06/2007 13:36

MoM I was given two huge boxes of estee lauder makeup for Christmas (overenthusiastic first time grandparents) and have only used a tiny fraction of it. Please let me send you some. Email e1375 underscore a at hotmail dot com. Better let me know what your skin/hair colours are like.

oh gosh now i am really embarressed and have completely hijacked flumpybumpy's thread

mumto3girls · 11/06/2007 14:46

no need to be embarrassed - just email me!

NineUnlikelyTales · 11/06/2007 16:58

Likewise. I really meant it. I'd hate to throw it away after 6 months.

Flumpybumpy · 12/06/2007 10:16

MOM - it's cool, honest. No hijacking apology needed, if it results in you getting a some freebies and becoming a yummy Mummy then horray

We had a PTA meeting the the school and even the Mum's that hadn't made an effort looked better then me, I sat throught the whole thing feeling very flabby and frumpy. I did go and paint my toenails last night and even managed a coat on the my fingernails too and it has lifted my esteem up a fraction. I keep catching sight of them and feeling pleased.

I was on the way to swimming this morning and saw a woman with a pushchair and she was so slim with a lovely pair of trousers (I wear skirts a lot because hard to find trousers to fit size 16 with short legs!)and I just thought how scruffy I was in comparison. And got our photos back of our holiday and I'm in 3 (out of a couple of hundred) because I won't let anyone take pictures of me because I am HIDEOUS and FAT. DS will look through our albums in twenty years time and wonder if I was just a figment of his imagination!

MrsFish · 18/06/2007 18:06

I know what you mean slayerette, we have been away for a week and there is not one pic of me to be seen, I am the one behind the camera

whomovedmychocolate · 18/06/2007 18:09

I apologise - I am a yummy mummy - apparently - so people tell me and I have to say we are just as paranoid as everyone else just we choose to focus on being paranoid about our kids rather than ourselves (displacement activities include enrolling six month olds for music and movement classes)

Mumto3girls - is it the original Mum of monsters you are after (now musicians widow)?

YeahBut · 18/06/2007 18:14

OK, I'm a woman that really makes an effort every day - make up, nice clothes etc. and it is completely a self esteem thing. I've suffered from terrible pnd after all my pregnancies and get really down on myself. Making a point of looking after myself and looking OK when I see myself in a mirror is all about boosting my own confidence. I would hazard a guess that lots of these uber-stylish mums are also uber-anxious and as full of self doubt as anyone else.

ggglimpopo · 18/06/2007 18:18

I make an effort, wear clothes that fit and make up and brush my hair.

Baggy clothes are the kiss of the devil. You are better off with three tops that fit than with twenty baggy tee shirts.

Clean hair, a dash of mascara and a smile go a long way.

Sound like a sanctimonius cwo don't I?

hana · 18/06/2007 18:18

sometimes I'm one, sometimes I'm the other
just depends on if I've ad the time in the am to get have a shower or not, find some clean clothes or not, dry my hair or not......etc etc!
feel so much better when I've made the effort
(didn't today, too rushed and a late night.......am sure that the mums at school think I am actually 2 different women!)

SomethingIncrediblyWitty · 18/06/2007 18:25

I know full well i am a frump, a bit of a geek, and hate fashion (usually cos it's for people thinner than me at size 16-18), but my dds think i'm slim (bless 'em), and dh is still interested in the bedroom department - and not with the lights of either...who am i to argue?

ConnorTraceptive · 18/06/2007 18:26

heels definately make me feel better, if i ever wear flat shoes i always feel a frumpy and over weight.

GLoveandSpecialSauce · 18/06/2007 18:26

if you've been like that before .... you've would like to carry on like that...if you've been a bit on the frumpy side before kids...then magic does not happen!

The only thing i disagree with there is the make-up thing as i hate the feel of it on my face. Also i have a problem with spots (caused by oily skin/ Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, whichever u like)which make-up actually makes look worse!!!
Washing hair often enough helps - doesn't have to be every day.
Buy clothes to flatter your shape (curvy or not), not hide it like a tent! My dh tld me off for doing that ages ago and it was the best advice i've had.
Oh, and if you're not sure what clothes do suit you, try loads on in the shop!
Ok maybe i'm not too past this lark after all. I think i'll go shopping now (lol...i'm actually skint)

OrmIrian · 18/06/2007 19:26

I sort of agree with most of this but there is only so much you can do. I look tired and pale much of the time (mainly because I am very pale-skinned and I am totally knackered on a regular basis). And make-up only disguises that so far. After I've been for a run and had a shower I look and feel so much better and don't need all that stuff on my face. I want to feel like that all the time and I can't help feeling that make-up, nice clothes etc is only so much window dressing. I do it because otherwise small children and old ladies would keel over ... but I know that it's not making a difference to what I really look like iyswim.

satine · 18/06/2007 19:31

But Something - how about some mascara? And lippy? Would that be ok with your skin? I find that a swipe of mascara (and a bit of eyeliner at the base of the eyelashes on the outer corner of the top lid) makes a big difference to my face. And having my eyebrows done also transorms my face (find a beauty therapist whose eyebrows look fab!).

IMO any dress looks miles better than jeans and a T shirt. You don't have to spend a fortune to appear stylish!

SomethingIncrediblyWitty · 18/06/2007 19:31

Hehehe...ikwym about the pale skinned-ness, i have such pale skin the sun is only out 10 minutes and my nose is burnt and peeling...very embarrassing. And yes, it's what's on the inside that counts anyway isn't it? Some people i know look fab but have the personality traits of an angry rhino. Ok so somelook nice and are lovely people too but that's not the point is it

admylin · 18/06/2007 19:51

I remember last time I was in the Uk my sister took me round her fave shops and I was amazed how cheap it all was compared to Germany, she buys loads of cheap tops so she always has something new to put on. When you feel down abit, it always halps to have something new to wear and it doesn't have to cost a fortune, there is no excuse not to be well dressed really.
I got alot of sale stuff so linen skirts for 1 pound 50 and tops, blouses for 2 pounds etc, I filled a suitcase for under 30 pounds.
Some of these well dressed and groomed mums are just good at shopping, it's a skill! I'm useless and I live in Berlin and still can go out clothes shopping and come home empty handed. I'm wearing last summers shoes because I just can't find any nice ones in the whole of Berlin (proof of how crap I am at shopping)

SomethingIncrediblyWitty · 18/06/2007 19:58

Speaking of skirts...might be a personal question...i find i get horrible sore bits when i wear skirts, just at top of my legs. Is it cos i'm fat (5'3" and weigh 11 and half stone, so i am overweight), or is it the way i'm walking??? sorry to hi-jack btw but it's bugged me for a while. Break it to me gently please!
