Quirky winter coat

IJustWantToWearDungarees · 22/09/2018 22:27

I have been saving up for a good quality winter coat - in previous years I have always spent about £60 and they have ended up pilling, losing their shape, and not being that warm.

I am a bit nerdy so I was thinking of getting a duffle coat - can anyone recommend a good brand? Alternatively, something a little on the quirky side would work - happy to experiment with colour/shape.

I could spend up to £250. Would like this to be an investment to last several years.

Thank you for any recommendations! Smile

its not quirky, but i have an older version of this and it has lasted me years. its so warm and the hood is made of faux fur, which was important to me.

Thanks sleep! I'm not generally a fan of the padded ones because I'm a bit larger than I should be at the moment, and I think they make me look bigger, but I may go and try it on at my local joules. Interesting to hear it has worn well - I have a yellow joules mac which I love but which is looking a bit worn after only a year. Glad to hear that's unusual for them!

Banana I love the Gloverall ones but at £350 they are more than I was hoping to spend - do you know if they ever have a sale or discount event? My dream would be a Gloverall duffle!

There are some amazing quirky and somewhat nerdy coats on EMP. Definitely worth having a look at if you're up for something a bit different.

There is an online Gloverall outlet that you need to become a member to browse or if you are near enough there is a factory shop in Northamptonshire.

Joe Browns do quirky coats but I would class them as dressy rather than winter warm.

Topshop are worth a look. DD got a duffle coat from there 2yrs ago, still great condition and super warm! Was around £120.

SoupMode · 23/09/2018 13:19

This one?

IJustWantToWearDungarees · 23/09/2018 14:47

Oooh thank you so much - great tips. Will go and check out EMP and Top Shop. Have lots of tunics from Joe Browns and tend to find quality can be really variable, but definitely worth a look.

The Gloverall outlet is a real find - v excited! Nothing suitable on there at the moment but I will definitely be keeping an eye on it!

I bought a Gloverall from M&M direct a couple of years ago for about £100, might be worth keeping an eye out there too.

It is really, really nice.

Summerfalls · 23/09/2018 15:12

ASOS have a few nice duffles on the website.

Vinylsamso · 23/09/2018 15:18

Look on eBay for Gloverall. I’ve sold a brand new Gloverall duffel on there before.

IJustWantToWearDungarees · 23/09/2018 17:48

Brilliant - thank you! Just checked eBay and M&M and nothing suitable at the moment but will keep an eye out. The more I think about it, the more i think Gloverall is the way to go. They are soooo beautiful.

Joe Browns.

Uniqlo have some nice coats at the mo.

Bananajam · 23/09/2018 18:30

I've just bought the Pinsley moleskin coat (green but actually looks very dark grey) from White Stuff, I haven't bought anything from them for a while but I'm absolutely loving my new coat. It's warm, a good length and hopefully won't age too quickly. I'd recommend it, the only issue being you've just missed their 20% off weekend!

Cos coats are usually good quality and some of them are what you may consider quirky..

Seasalt. When I was looking for a new winter coat last year, they had lots of styles in lovely colours. Several people said their coats are warm and good quality.

I didn’t get one in the end - didn’t want a duffle/parka style and found something “smarter” - but my coat isn’t very warm and i sometimes wish I’d got a cosy Seasalt one!

Jammiebammie · 24/09/2018 08:47

Amazon have gloverall duffle costs slightly cheaper too.

AnotherEmma · 24/09/2018 08:58

For example Seasalt’s Seafolly raincoat comes in lovely colours and different lengths too.

BeeBoBoop · 24/09/2018 08:59

Just to second Seasalt- I bought one two years ago on sale and it's fab. Waterproof, found it warm enough for a Scottish New Years, (brrr!) but also you can wear it right into spring and autumn, very breathable and not heavy- think it'll last forever too. They have some lovely quirky designs.

Stabbitha · 24/09/2018 13:07

Joe browns have done very quirky coats.

IJustWantToWearDungarees · 24/09/2018 22:59

Thanks for the recommendations - I have spent some happy hours following all the links and researching!😀

I do like the Seasalt ones, but I already have a Joules fisherman-style mac, and I think they would be too similar.

Joe Browns is definitely a contender. Love their coats and I have a few of their waistcoats which have always been better quality than their tunics, so I might try there.

During my browsing I came across The Original Montgomery, which seems to be a slightly cheaper version of Gloverall. Does anyone have any experience of them?

PersonalityLines · 24/09/2018 23:03

I found out this weekend that my seasalt waterproof coat isn't waterproof :(

BikeRunSki · 24/09/2018 23:11

I had an Original Montgomery at school! I don’t think the fabric was as dense and thick as my Gloverall, which I have now. Not as good in the wind and rain as Gloverall. I love duffle costs and have a bit of s collection, including a vintage MossBros one with a sheepskin lining and a half moon collar that turns inside out and becomes a hood. I also have one from Fatface and one from Howies....

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 24/09/2018 23:13

Tattopani for quirk that is cheaper. Gringo also worth trying.
