Going bald! Help me style what’s left

First time posting here as I’m not into fashion really. But definitely need help with this.

I’m 4 months post baby and my hair is falling out in droves. Pulling great handfuls of the stuff every time I brush my hair or have a shower. If it keeps up like this I’m inevitably going to get bald patches. Think my current PND isn’t helping, so maybe I’m losing more than normal?!

What do I do? I’ve always been shit at doing my hair but how do I style it when there is hardly any left? I thought head scarfs but I worry I’ll look like a twat as I’ve never worn them before and I’m not fashionable. Wigs are just so obvious. I’m just going to have to get used to looking hideous aren’t I?

How long is it?

readysetcake · 22/09/2018 10:49

To my shoulders but it does need a trim.

You can get a vitamin from the pharmacy it's called skin, hair and nails. It's supposed to be good post partum. May be worth a try

Mrsharrison · 22/09/2018 11:30

Go heavy on the vitamins. And buy a few hats - cheap woolly ones that cover your scalp.

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 22/09/2018 11:34

Have you had a blood test recently? You might be anaemic. That always makes mine fall out.

My hair is really thin and rubbish due to chemo and anaemia. I do have a wig but it's not that comfortable.

I'd get it cut and ask the hairdresser for advice. Hopefully they can shape it a bit to cover up any thinner bits. Mine looks much better since I had it cut.

Change your parting - if it’s usually centre, try a side parting or vice versa as this may help make what you have appear fuller. Also experiment with hair spray to add lift from the root. And you can get your go to do a blood test for iron levels etc to see if there’s a fix they can give. Good luck

Thumbs up for the skin, hair & nails vitamin from Tesco. Give it a couple of weeks to get into your system

Good luck 💐

Forgot my actual styling advice - when I can be bothered I use volumising lotion. You're meant to blow dry it but my hair is so thin that it's pointless (and burns my scalp!) so I let it dry naturally and it still works well.

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 22/09/2018 11:44

I use Phil Smith Big it up thickening volume cream

During pregnancy most people's hair gets thicker, so the fall out post pregnancy is usually just things returning to normal.

However if yours is that had I'd urge you to see your gp, something doesn't sound right. Pregnancy can trigger lots of conditions, auction as thyroid issues, which can cause both hair loss and depression

dinosaurkisses · 22/09/2018 11:47

Are you sure you’re losing enough that it’s actually likely to end in baldness?

I went through the same thing a few months ago (at exactly the same stage post partum btw) and brushing my hair and seeing what was left in the shower tray was shocking. I was pretty sure I’d end up with no hair at all.

Turns out I still have a head of hair. It’s normal to lose up to 100 strands a day without the post-partum impact, and the longer your hair is the more noticeable it’ll be to you. During pregnancy you wouldn’t have been losing as much hair as you normally would have done, and you’re now shedding what you would have lost over those 9 months if you hadn’t been pregnant.

I agree with pp that it’ll do no harm to take some vitamins and if it’s very dramatic to visit a doctor to rule out anaemia etc.

Sleep in a silk nightcap. The opposite of sexy, but it will help protect your hair.

readysetcake · 22/09/2018 14:25

Thanks for the replies. I counted my hairs from one brushing this morning and it was over 100 and I had another two sheds like that after washing my hair so losing 300 a day at least. You can see my scalp at the hairline now when I put my hair up. Maybe it will just thin evenly all over. I have under active thyroid but just had my levels checked and they are ok. Guess I could check to see if I’m
Anemic.
I’ll try that spray, thank you. And I’ll go out and get some vitamins. If same in two weeks I guess I’ll have to see my gp.

Get your ferritin level tested. I found mine was low (23) and took ferrous fumarate supplements for 3 months and now I've got a ferritin level of 96 and lots of new growth on my scalp. It took about 6 weeks of the iron supplement for the hair to start regrowing. In the meantime you can use coloured dry shampoo or scalp powder to colour in any thin/bald patches so that you feel more confident.

AFistfulofDolores1 · 22/09/2018 15:05

Make an appointment with Philip Kingsley, OP.

bebesequin · 22/09/2018 15:33

Spa tone iron therapy twice a day.

Mine took about three years to get back to normal after both babies.

I had absurdly thick curly ringlets and barely had enough to put in a pony tail by the time it stopped shedding. My hairdresser reckoned I had lost about a third of my hair.

Agree a good cut .Up your iron and patience it does come back.

readysetcake · 22/09/2018 15:49

@bebesequin that sounds tough. But great that it came back eventually. I’ll look into the spa tone. I’ve made a gp appointment (online booking) for a few weeks and I’ll insist they test my Ferritin level.

I wish I could book an appointment at Phillip Kingsley fistful but there is now way I could afford it Sad.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

While you're waiting for it to thicken up again (and I'm sure it will, it's just the big drop in hormones), use dry shampoo. If you have dark hair, then the brunette one is great. Spray it liberally onto your scalp and surrounding hair, and it helps to disguise the thin-ness and also gives it more volume.
