Cleanser / make up remover thread

Hello ladies!

I am after some help with a good cleanser. I’ve previously used Clarins for a good few years but stopped because ££ and needed to cut back so used simple face wash and then No7’s version of the hot cloth cleanser which I really liked.

However No7 seem to have changed and the new one isn’t so good. I’ve also been using their alternative to Clinique melting gel thing which is okay. I tried ponds cold cream but it was awful.

Anyway I have acne prone skin, always have done and do have some scarring. Can anyone recommend some kind of routine / cleanser. I looked into the ordinary but I didn’t find them very helpful when I got in touch to get a routine.

Liz Earle cleanse and polish. It’s fab!

Any other hot cloth brand cleanser is a rip off of theirs anyway. It’s not cheap but it’s win every beauty award going. I wouldn’t use anything else.

If you’re on a really tight budget, Aldi do a hot cloth cleanser copy for £4 but I haven’t tried it. Bought it for my husband as he was kicking my Liz Earle!

starfish8 · 19/09/2018 21:13

Nicking!

Fstar · 19/09/2018 21:15

Aldi hot cloth cleanser is a good replacement, i too loved no7 but not since they changed it. For micellar water ive recently tried primarks grapefruit one and its brilliant, only 1.50.

RiojaHaze · 19/09/2018 21:15

I use garnier micellar water to clean, followed by the ordinary lactic acid (alternated with retinol in the winter) and then their rosehip oil.

incendio · 19/09/2018 21:16

Liz Earle cleanse and polish is fab, I've repurchased so many times but I've recently tried Superdrug's vitamin e hot cloth cleanser and I actually really like it and it's about £4 (I think) for a huge tube and it comes with a cloth!

I've also tried lush's 9 to 5 and use it in the same way as cleanse and polish and it's really nice, makes my skin feel fab but it stings my eyes a bit.

TheBitterBoy · 19/09/2018 21:21

I have used Liz Earle for.years but noticed with the last couple of purchases that it was starting to sting my eyes, so I've been trying a load and find the Asda hot cloth cleanser to work really well and Superdrug Natural Radiance is a!so really good. Both under a tenner, and under a fiver if you catch them on a deal. My other favourite is M&S Pure rose cleansing balm, which is like Take The Day Off but with a beautiful scent and £12 a pot.

boffin9207 · 19/09/2018 21:24

Thanks for your suggestions. I have a Superdrug nearby and will try their hot cloth cleanser.

Micellar water - should I be using this after cleansing? I used to cleanse, tone, moisturise religiously with clarins but ready somewhere that you don’t need to use toner these days - something to do with advances in cleansers or something.

Double cleanse, but be gentle.

Body shop chamomile balm or oil, or similar hot cloth cleanser first. Use warm water and clean cloth every time.

Then a gentle follow up. Try avene foaming or if you're like me and foaming stuff winds your face up, glossier milky jelly cleanser. Smooth on, rinse off.

I love the ordinary azelaic acid for brightening my scarred Acne prone face, and it helps with spot prevention too. My face is far better using this, and their niacinamide and zinc beforehand. When I stop either, I can see the difference.

Then simple moisturiser. Again, the ordinary natural moisturising factors suits my skin in pm, and I like classic olay for the morning (quick wash with cleanser, then light moisturiser, SPF and then makeup)

Maverick66 · 19/09/2018 22:08

Hi op
I can't recommend the Clinique cleansing balm highly enough
I know it's £24 but it is worth it and will last.
You will spend money trying this and that but you will be wasting your money in the long run.

Destinesia · 19/09/2018 22:31

I have acne prone, ageing skin but must be in the minority as my skin doesn't react well with oils/oily cleansers.

I use the Primark makeup eraser cloth, followed by Dr Sam's Flawless Cleanser. Neither are luxurious or glamorous but they work for me!

Starfish83 · 20/09/2018 00:36

Following. 😊

boffin9207 · 20/09/2018 07:53

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I will look at getting a second cleanser. I might try glossier purely because I have seen it on social media.

MissMarples - do you use the niacinamide and zinc after cleansing but before th azeliac acid?

I use Kiehls midnight recovery usually and I have a daytime moisturiser from another boots brand which had the highest spf I could find.

Please be very careful with Liz Earle. There was a recent thread about it and a lot of people had real issues with it, myself included. I've been lucky enough to have good skin but Liz Earle gave me lumpy red welts all over my cheeks. It was a gradual thing too so it took me ages to realise (over a year of hideous skin). A lot of people have this issue, it's really not good for sensitive skin. I use Lush Ultrabland now and haven't had any issues, my skin has never been in better condition.

Imamouseduh · 20/09/2018 08:06

Elemis radiant skin cleanser is excellent. You leave it on for one minute to dissolve make up then remove with hot cloth. Really good product and great at controlling the odd break out.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 20/09/2018 09:36

I have used and like:

Liz Earle - you can get a lavender and something or other version of the original now for more sensitive skins

Superdrug Vit E

Body Shop Chamomile Butter

Boots Botanics Organic balm

I repeat purchase all of these

Others I'm not keen on:

Superdrug Radiant- very perfumed, smells synthetic, made my skin scratchy

Burts Bees- only thing ever to make my face red raw

I personally wouldn't use micellar water of any kind- or at least read up on the science behind it.

For the oily skin, have you tried Effaclar by La Roche Posay? It has changed my daughter's life.

FaithInfinity · 20/09/2018 09:37

I have sensitive skin. I’ve recently switched from cleanser/toner and cotton wool with Body Shop Drops of Youth day and night cream to using Cheeky Wipes washable face pads with coconut oil. I honestly think it’s much better for my skin! Initial investment of the wipes was expensive but I’ve saved that in cleanser and toner already in the two month’s I’ve had them.
I have noticed my crow’s feet look worse though so I might get more body shop moisturiser to top up at night though.

MinesaPinot · 20/09/2018 13:15

Micellar Water to take off makeup, Clinique Take the Day off lids and lips for mascara and then Clinique Take the Day off cleansing balm.

I'm 56 and skin looks better than ever with this regime.

VeganEmma · 20/09/2018 13:39

I had such a huge problems finding the right cleanser. I used many of them, but eventually my sensitive skin rejected most of them. That is why I started looking for some natural and organic cleansers. I eventually bought this one virginic.com/collections/cleansers/products/sweet-almond-cleanser-2-phase-makeup-remover. I’m using it for some time now, but so far so good. It doesn’t dry my skin out, it smells clean and fresh and my skins likes it. If you have sensitive skin, I would strongly recommend using natural products with pure ingredients - it’s safe!.

stevie69 · 20/09/2018 13:49

I use a little coconut oil, remove it with a hot cloth and then wash with baby soap.

Very cheap and seems to do the trick Smile

Deathraystare · 20/09/2018 15:42

I like the Garnier miscellar water with oil suspended in it. Also Liz Earle and also Anne French (but use an eye make up remover first).

luckycat007 · 20/09/2018 16:52

Following!!

MissMarplesKnitting · 20/09/2018 17:01

OP I do in this order:

Oil cleanse
Glossier jelly cleanser
Niacinamide and zinc. Few drops, pat into spot prone areas.
Azelaic acid. This is a gel type texture. Use about 5p sized blob. Leave to soak in. If skin feels like it needs it, moisturiser later (or in my case, just before lights off cos I forget!!)

Morning I just do jelly cleanser, then light moisturiser and SPF.

Charley50 · 20/09/2018 17:08

I just use Garnier water for my eye make up and a steamy flannel with hot water on it. Blush Then night cream.

boffin9207 · 25/09/2018 12:10

Thanks so much for your helpful responses.

I bought the Superdrug vit E hot cloth cleanser as it was on offer. So far I like it.

With my second cleanser, can anyone recommend a Clinique one? I need to order a replacement powder brush (my one broke after 10 years 🙈) and thought I may as well try a cleanser from there.

OP posts:
allmycats · 25/09/2018 12:17

Liz Earle - the cheaper ones just are not as good IMO.
However, micellar water, check out what it does to the environment, it should be banned !!! (and it dries the skin).
