I would like to try shampoo and conditioner bars. I've heard amazing things about the Lush ones....but am reluctant to shop there after their campaign against the Police. Can anyone recommend any other brands?

No, but following!

I would also prefer not to use Lush after a few of their campaigns and advertising.

I know there are some bars sold on places like Babipur, but I'm not sure of the quality.

Following too. I tried these on Amazon but didn't get on with them. Left my hair looking greasy, I think it was a build up of product but no matter how much I rinsed it didn't get any better. Hoping to find one for me and DD.

Same here, I used a Lush bar and thought it was great if travelling, but I also refuse to shop there anymore for the same reason as you OP.

cedartree12 · 18/09/2018 08:21

Will avoid that one 3stone, thanks.

I like the lush bars. I still shop there. I thought their campaign was badly handled but I agree with the fundamental message.
The publicity after it and the reporting afterwards didn't talk about what they were trying to convey.

But maybe I'm the only one who still shops there.

Veering off topic a bit but reading their statement and their responses to the comments, I think it’s a bit bold for Lush to argue that consumers/public misunderstood their campaign. If people didn’t understand the message they wanted to convey, the campaign was poorly executed. Don’t blame customers for a bad campaign. Total own goal for Lush. And arguably, given their brand has no connection to the issue they were highlighting, it was a bad idea from the start.

Aside from that, interested in any other suggestions - I’d like to find a shower soap that you can hang up to stop it going manky. Like a nice, good quality soap on a rope. Has anyone found one?

cedartree12 · 18/09/2018 09:20

Leggy I completely agree with you regarding Lush. I would also like to find a decent shower soap!

Lush aside (on that one I agree with Theworldisfullofgs ) I tried the Friendly Soap co Lavender & Geranium and was disappointed to find the same as a pp with a different shampoo bar - my hair felt like there was a residue on it so didn't feel clean.

That bar was 2.80 locally, but all the other options seem to be at least 6 quid for something you might get two washes out of if unsuitable.

Are all shampoo bars $$$? What's different about them that makes them more than soap?

DizzyLizzieisnothappy · 18/09/2018 20:29

Use the Lush bars - they good and are not tested on animals. That's what's important, not their misguided/misunderstood campaigns.

Lucked · 18/09/2018 20:59

I used the lush shampoo bars and got on fine with them but I am also put off shopping there. I found the conditioner bar useless though, I am not sure there is a good alternative.

thedevilinablackdress · 18/09/2018 21:31

Politics/campaigns aside, the Lush bars work well (or as we expect shampoo to work) because they have SLS, which a lot of other bars don't eg the Friendly soaps ones. So with these, you tend to get a bit of waxy build up IME. Vinegar rinse can help with this.
Depends what you want; look at the ingredients.

Never got on with any bar conditioners.

Weathergirl1 · 18/09/2018 22:20

I've used Lush bars for years but am now trying to avoid SLS after a recommendation on here that it could be causing dry skin on my heels (already switched to bar soap instead of SLS shower gel) and aided by the addressee campaign and the fact that they've fully discontinued one of my staple bars and partially discontinued the other one).

I have tried two bars from The Funky Soap Shop and have had the same build up issue as others have mentioned. They do explain this in the information and recommend ways to overcome it (persistence being one of them!). I decided to try and wean myself off SLS by using a normal shampoo (Child's Farm doesn't contain SLS or SLES) first but have temporarily gone back to the Lush bar I already had as it needs using up (with the result that my heels have got worse again). I'm going to try again with Child's Farm once that's finished and then go back to the shampoo bars after that.

Not sure what to do about conditioner. The Lush bar was good for shaving legs but never worked on my hair so I was using their American Cream which also apparently contains SLS... It's in practically everything Angry

picklemepopcorn · 18/09/2018 22:49

Try a vinegar rinse after a hair bar. It's basically a soap, and the wrong PH, so a dilute acid rinse helps.
A desertspoon of white vinegar or lemon juice in a cup of water.
Squeeze some water out of your hair in the shower, drizzle the acidic water on, squish it about to soak the hair and scalp, then squeeze out again before drying.

cucumbergin · 18/09/2018 23:52

Thanks for the vinegar rinse tip - it'd be nice to get some use out of that shampoo bar so will give it a go.

stayathomer · 18/09/2018 23:56

Tried Lush and it really didn't work. Everyone is saying to be environmentally conscious people should switch to bars of soap but I'd have thought people stopped using them on their bodies because of hygiene and I haven't heard anyone suggest any for hair that compete at all especially when you have difficult hair:(

DizzyLizzieisnothappy · 19/09/2018 03:23

Why should you stop using bar soaps because of hygiene?

cucumbergin · 26/09/2018 08:58

Tried the vinegar rinse last night - and it worked! Hair feels lovely and clean today with same shampoo bar that felt icky with residue before. I misremembered the detail so used a capful in a jug & then rinsed off with fresh water after a minute or so, but still worked.

Thank you @picklemepopcorn !

fishonabicycle · 26/09/2018 09:04

Not found a great shampoo bar yet, but Faith in Nature soap bars are lovely. I have no dry skin on feet or shins since using those.

OhHolyJesus · 04/10/2018 22:17

Thanks for the vinegar rinse tip - this thread is exactly what I needed as I have been struggling with residue also. Have tried lots of different shampoo and conditioner bars and I was getting the residue thing and lots of my hair was coming out as I was trying to rinse it out. Reverted back to old travel bottles of shampoo just for my hair to feel clean! Will try vinegar next time.

And no more Lush products for me either - as well as their support for Mermaids and the weird police campaign they don't seem to respect female staff as I found out about a kissing record they held from Mumsnet and it wasn't good!
