Maintaining sufficient facial sun protection during the day

On non makeup days this is obviously easy but what about on makeup days?

I use a primer with SPF30 followed by my Bare Minerals powder with SPF15 but I’m not convinced that is enough to protect my face all day. However for the life of me I can’t work it how to keep the SPF topped up all day without removing my makeup a few times and starting over, clearly this is impractical.

So, how do you skincare experts achieve full day coverage whilst wearing makeup all day?

Proper facial SPF, e.g. Body Shop's skin defence if you need a higher SPF. Simple's light moisturise with SPF15 if not.

Lush also have a powder that claims to have some SPF, maybe you could reapply it a couple of times a day?

Are you in the UK?

Yep in the U.K., so proper facial SPF before the primer then?

La Roche Posay Anthelios and also Ambre Solaire both do face mist SPF 50. Link for the LRP one here (haven't bought from this site so it's not a recommendation) uk.vitazita.com/en/buy/la-roche-posay-anthelios-face-mist-spf50-nm/?gclid=CjwKCAjw2_LcBRBYEiwA_XVBUyiO_-zd-yVtBos2evOBrlULWWuKz5oJZbEL2zKMeaf7klEXLCfNohoCSTkQAvD_BwE

Those are so fine you can spray them over makeup ( that's what they're designed for)

ArkAtEee Thanks, I’ll take a look at those.

I’m thinking of supplementing my regime with a Retinol product so definitely want to protect my face properly.

I'd say facial SPF before primer. I'm not a fan of retinol / anything like that, so I can't comment on that.

I struggle with a similar question so watching with interest. Boots did an own brand factor 50 8 hour facial sunscreen this summer. Was quite a small bottle, but the best solution I've found so far.

Frezyderm SPF 50 acts like a primer, so you can wear that under your makeup and do away with a step. You can also get an SPF 30 option.

It also comes in a tinted version with a built in CC cream which is really, really good. You could cut out two steps with that, primer and foundation.

I don't know how good the sprays are for over the top of makeup, but they've got to be better than nothing.

are you spending a lot of time outdoors?

reallybadidea · 16/09/2018 10:15

I wear moisturiser with spf20 and foundation with spf15. I'm extremely fair skinned and tend to burn very easily. I kept up this routine on holiday to Africa this year and didn't get so much as a hint of a tan on my face. No top-up during the day so not convinced that it's worth doing anything special to be honest.

Biologifemini · 16/09/2018 10:30

I’d wear tinting moisturiser with spf on top of an spf so you can see if it has worn off.
Zinc and titanium are the most stable spf too.
If you are not outside/sitting by a window a lot I wouldn’t worry too much. I personally think spf can give a false sense of security - it is better to use some and seek shade.

I'm not sure if this has been said as I only skim-read some of the comments. But please do not rely solely on SPF in makeup/skincare products as your only source of sun protection. There has been research into this, and to get the required minimum level of coverage that will actually protect your skin in these products would be so much more than you would ever need. For example, for foundation with SPF in, you would need 12 full pumps of it to get the minimum protection.

You need SPF that is solely SPF in your skincare routine, I like La Roche Posay from Boots. Just don't rely on SPF within another product as your only source of protection
