Morning all!

I'm heading to the shops very shortly and I'm in desperate need of some cheap skincare products! My skin is quite oily and I seem very prone to spots at the moment (thank you breastfeeding hormones!). I'd be super-grateful for recommendations for the following:

  • Make up remover (that gets mascara off too)
  • Cleanser (I love a face wash)
  • Toner (do I need to use this?!)
  • Moisturiser (I'll mix this with Ultrasun sunscreen)
  • Something to target spots (I love Origins On the Spot remover but it is pricey!)

I remember reading good things about some Body Shop and Superdrug products, but can't remember which they are?

Thank you in advance! 😊 x

Superdrug Vit E hot cloth cleanser is lovely. The Radiant range is liked by many but I find it harsh and it smells fake iyswim.
I wouldn't go for facial wash cleansers, but for hot cloth cleansers- Body Shop Chamomile Butter is also v nice (prob on a 40% code online somewhere, as BS tends to be)
Your hot cloth cleanser should be able to get the make up off as well.
Toner is the thing that has made the biggest difference to me- an acid toner, not a bogstandard one though- if you're oily, you prob want a salicylic based one. Olay do one I think, or the Superdrug own brand pads. (nip and fab also v good)
General feeling among skincare gurus is that any old moisturiser will do, it's what you do before, and the treatments (serums etc) which do the transformation work. Can't beat Astral in the blue pot IMO, though if you're oily you will prob find it too heavy. Again, Superdrug is your friend, they do a great range called Pure or something- fab hydrating serum as well.
Targeting spots- my dd (aged 15) maintains a lush tea tree one is the best she's ever used. I'd go for pure tea tree oil for a budget option.

Simple grape (??) seedcleaning oil. Removes everything ime and is very cheap.
I don't use toner but I do a weekly chemical peel.

CeraVe moisturiser (and cleanser) is quite good imo.

And obviously a good sunscreen.

You need to wear sunscreen (at least SPF 25) everyday if you use actives...

Don't mix moisturiser with sunscreen otherwise it will be useless. Let your moisturiser absorb first, then put the sunscreen on.

I don't use a toner, and for cleanser I use micellar water (lots of brands do this).

Love Superdrug hot cloth cleanser. I don't use the vitamin e, I prefer the naturally radiant. I actually use a lot of that range including the moisturiser.

I like glycolic pads for toning. Nip + Fab are good and are often on offer. The superdrug range I mentioned also has glycolic pads but I haven't tried them yet.

Ooh, thank you dear posters!

Barba, can you explain a bit more about mixing sunscreen and moisturiser please? Why does mixing it make the sunscreen "useless"? 😬 Thanks!

I use Superfacialist cleanser. It has salicylic acid as I'm prone to spots anyway. Post pregnancy my hormones went mad as well so that helped.

I also use Superfacialist exfoliator every 3 days or so. You can get them from Boots.

Then I use a homemade toner every day. Boiled water with a few drops of tea tree essential oil (from Holland & Barrett). You can alternatively buy this from Lush but it's cheaper doing it homemade.

Then I use Rosehip essential oil from Victoria Health to moisturise. I find alot of moisturisers too heavy for my skin. All you need is a couple of drops and hey Presto.

Barbayagar · 12/09/2018 13:45

Because you are effectively diluting the SPF protection in the sunscreen if you are mixing it with another product. What you end up with is not reliable for sun protection.

Starfish83 · 12/09/2018 14:31

Oh yes, Barba! 🙈Thank you. Thanks, too, Plink. 💐

Dd swears by Simple cream eye make up remover. It's usually on offer somewhere. I never pay full price for it.
