Black tie New year Ceilidh

Can anyone help me find a dress that would be suitable for a traditional Scottish Ceilidh, please? Ideally in warm autumnal jewel colours (ie no bright pinks or yellows). Also some shoe tips would be greatly appreciated.

Total Ceilidh virgin here but looking at pics I need something I can move in easily. Beyond that I'm a bit stumped.

Wear something that is not too hot and flat shoes. My in laws are Scottish and love a ceilidh - either bring some flat shoes for dancing or just wear flats with your dress. Ime most people just wear flats. Enjoy! I love ceilidhs they’re a fab night out

dementedma · 09/09/2018 18:07

oooh, love a ceilidh. Definitely flat shoes for dancing in and don't wear anything with a very full skirt as all the birling about will reveal your knickers to all and sundry. Keep it loose, cool and have fun

YeTalkShiteHen · 09/09/2018 18:10

Definitely flats! My poor cousin nearly broke her ankle coming to my Dad/uncle’s joint birthday ceilidh in Louboutins!

Nothing too tight, or swirly as a pp said you don’t want the world seeing your knickers if you’re enthusiastically danced with!

Are either of these your style? Coast has quite a few suitable ones - not the off the shoulder dresses though as you need to move your arms.

something like this?

legolammb · 09/09/2018 18:11

Jealous! I love a ceilidh - so much fun. Just to second the comment about avoiding a flared skirt - learnt from bitter experience Blush and also avoid anything too restrictive on your arms as you'll be holding them up a lot so off-the-shoulder styles wouldn't be ideal

I love this, it’s quite festive. Needs the twirl test though!

dementedma · 09/09/2018 18:13

tempted to go for that second coast link myself for our Christmas work night out - also a ceilidh. Love the colour!

TakeAChanseyOnMe · 09/09/2018 18:22

You’ve just reminded me of my own ceilidh wardrobe malfunction. I was wearing a halter neck dress that came undone, revealing my ugly nude strapless bra, Judy Finnegan style. Blush

pantosaurus · 09/09/2018 19:22

Wholeheartedly agree with the flats and not too tight dress plus bra that stays in place no matter what. I've seen that go horribly wrong for a larger chested friend on a crowded dancefloor.

However I disagree with PPs about skirts. I would actively choose something with a bit of a swoosh to it for the birling. That's part of the fun, should be kilts and skirts flying about. Just make sure it's long enough to stay decent (and that you've got decent knickers on just in case it doesn't!)

barneymcgroo · 09/09/2018 19:45

I have a full length chiffon skirt from Coast about 10 years ago - it's brilliant, as it's very swirly, and I love the movement. And then I can wear flats (or literally ANY shoe) underneath, and nobody can see.

AceAcer · 09/09/2018 20:21

Love those Coast dresses!

Black Tie does not mean a long dress . If you are to be dancing , a shorter length dress is preferable.
It can get a bit boisterous !

twattymctwatterson · 09/09/2018 22:29

Something you can move in - don't go for full length

Balloondog · 09/09/2018 22:49

Speaking from bitter experience I'd say closed toe shoes as well as flats are advisable! The last ceilidh I went to I had my foot trodden on by a lady in stiletos in the first 10 minutes which rendered me hobbled for the rest of the evening and with a gloriously blue/purple/yellow foot for the next week.

Shampaincharly · 09/09/2018 23:49

@ Balloondog , me too !

Ceilidh caller and enthusiastic (some would say over- enthusiastic ) dancer here.
Either the green Coast or the red Coast . Nothing with sleeves and definitely not a scuba fabric . ( much too hot !)
Flattish shoes that are not flimsy ballet pumps that you have to claw your toes to keep on , and mind out for any clunky bracelets !
As a caller it’s quite nice to have a bright colour to focus on to see how a set is progressing Grin especially if all the men are in dark suits or more likely white shirt sleeves .
Although I like the idea of formal jacket coming off and a shirt like this being revealed !
The link isn’t working but it’s £20 from eBay .
In fact I think I will get DI one for a ceilidh we are going to .
