I usually have my hair dyed with semi permanent colour at a salon. Money’s tight this year so I’d like to try myself. I’m totally clueless. Any tips? I’ve got dark brown shoulder length hair with a fair few greys.

My number one tip.

Do a strand test
and do a patch test for allergies but the strand test is vital too.

I have dyed my hair since forever , decided to be a tad cavalier and applied a mahogany mixed with a light ish brown .
Nice shade of mild red , I thought.
No it was purple . And my greys were pink .

I didn't want to overdye so I tried the Vit C , and against all odds it lifted the horrible mauve.

These photos are 100% untouched - the one with the random hand is my dodgy colour (2nd one leaves a lot to be desired but at least its brown)

Thanks! I’m really worried about it going wrong and having to spend a fortune fixing it.

Go lighter than you think you need.
If I use a 6.0 my hair is too dark. My go-to at the moment (I'll sweep the whole mahogany fiasco under the carpet) is a 7.73

Hairdresser here, home colour tend to be darker than salon colours in general. If you have grey in your hair I would stick to a plain color with no tones, so 5 or 6 not 5.4 for example or you can end up with glowing roots.

Always do a patch test and a strand test just in case.

Have a look on here for threads about majirel.

It's much better than shop bought boxes and easier to apply with a cream peroxide.

Don't go any darker than a 5.
