DM patent lace ups

I want to buy some online as I don't have time to go to a shop. My leather DM boots - not lace-ups - are roomy and good in a size 6 for me as I have wide feet. Sometimes with boots I have to up a size due to width. Have you found the patent ones roomy like the leather ones? I'm doing a spot of googling and the jury seems to be out and I'm just wondering which to order.

I got the patent ones for Christmas 2 years ago- I’m on the small side of a size 6, but yes they are quite wide.

I have found them impossible to break in, however! I don’t know if it’s because the patent leather is less supple, but every time I wear them my heels get cut to ribbons.

If you hear any breaking-in tips let me know, as I love them!

Potato2242 · 08/09/2018 09:19

Doesn't matter on your size, you won't get them to break :)

Freetodowhatiwant · 08/09/2018 09:20

Agh! That's annoying to hear!! I was hoping they would be as comfy as my leather non-lace-up ones. I have read this before too. Maybe I should just go non-patent.

Same as dinosaurkisses, I've had mine for about 5 years and they still hurt my heels. And they squeak when I walk!
I found the sizing pretty typical for DMs, I have wide feet too and they don't feel too tight.

SoupMode · 08/09/2018 09:24

Defo go non-patent. Or if you have your heart set on patent maybe the patent DM brogues would be comfier?

Bluesheep8 · 08/09/2018 09:25

Snap! I've had mine for over a year and they are consigned to the back of the wardrobe as they are AGONY to wear. I've tried and tried to wear them with thick socks/insoles but have officially given up now. A very expensive mistake.Hmm

Bluesheep8 · 08/09/2018 09:25

And they squeak and creak too. They are just AWFUL!

Freetodowhatiwant · 08/09/2018 09:39

Oh dear, it seems to be unanimous. What a disappointment! No wonder I don't see many people wearing the patent ones even though they look so lovely and shiny. I just thought that the shine would give them the extra zing to take them from stomping about in the day time to also looking okay with dresses at night.

I’m pleased but disappointed that I’m not the only person who hasn’t been able to break them in- I thought I had a weird shaped heel or something!

I don’t mind the squeaking though- it makes me feel like the bad-ass old man neighbour from Home Alone.

Freetodowhatiwant · 08/09/2018 09:51

I'm taking it all in...yet still looking at online reviews and thinking maybe I could just be that one person that doesn't find them too hard to break in...? deluded

I have patent lace up DMs and they are so comfy! I'm about a 4.5 and have a size 4. They definitely weren't awful to break in

Ineedahouse · 08/09/2018 16:12

I have patent dm boots and they are very comfy!! They do squeak a bit sometimes but nothing terrible. I wore them today specifically as I was expecting to be doing a lot of walking (4 miles at least) and I knew they wouldnt rub my feet.

Ineedahouse · 08/09/2018 16:26

Also I have had mine for 3 years and worn them constantly through winter walking to work, walking dogs etc. and they have been great! They do look a bit grubby today but the patent hasn't cracked and I could easily get another winter's heavy wear out of them. For a change though Im looking for some grey leather ones as my xmas present to myself.

Rumplestaleskin · 08/09/2018 17:59

I found mine to have similar break in period experience as most DMs. Wore them a lot last winter as so comfy once worn in. However, they have split across the crease so, personally, I’m sticking with non patent in future.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 08/09/2018 20:54

I have a pair of vegan lace ups. Size 6, I have quite wide feet and they feel true to size. They have taken a fair bit of breaking in. Wore them in the house for about a month, increasing the time each day. In between times stuffed them with paper to help stretch them and did get some DM socks, padded on heels so helps in the first few weeks.

CMOTDibbler · 08/09/2018 21:04

I've got bright red patent ones with rainbow laces and mine don't rub (and I am ridiculously prone to blisters). At first I wore them with double layer running socks, but now can wear them with anything and are my choice of boot for festivals etc.

Stayoutoftheforest · 08/09/2018 21:52

Slight derail but does anyone have any tips for reviving an ancient pair of DM they’re not patent but are shimmery coloured. Would a coloured polish work on them maybe?

TheRattleBag · 08/09/2018 23:01

@Freetodowhatiwant
I have patent DM boots with heels.

I have many pairs of DMs, some 6, some 6½ and some 7s.

The patent boots are 7s but I think that's 'cos of the heel. Width is absolutely fine - no narrower than other styles. And I didn't really find the patent any harder to break in than matt leather.

I do wear thicker socks with them though 'cos the patent doesn't feel as comfortable around the top, though that's probably not an issue with shoes.

I wore them a few years ago to stand for nigh on 6 hours at a gig, and had no problems Grin

MikeUniformMike · 08/09/2018 23:25

Buy them on ebay. No doubt someone will have bought some and failed to break them in.

backinaminute · 09/09/2018 06:40

I'm on my third year of my patent ones. They haven't had the used I'd hoped because of the breaking in period - hardly worn them the first year.

They are fine now but have taken some time and double socks and preventative plasters!!

backinaminute · 09/09/2018 06:40

'Use' even

Freetodowhatiwant · 12/09/2018 14:28

I ordered them anyway, carelessly regarding all the good advice on here. I wanted you all to be wrong. I was going to be the one, dammit, Cinder-bleedin-ella, the boots would fit.

But gosh they're awful! They're going right back. I humbly apologise for ever doubting any of you sob

The worst part is they looked bloody amazing and gave me a bit of a patent leather school shoe hit I haven't had since, well, school.
