Day old hair or freshly washed?

I'm attempting big bouncy voluminous/glam curls for a wedding I'm going to at the weekend.

I've read somewhere that you should curl day old hair rather than freshly washed due to the texture holding the curl better?
I've got a special serum spray to put in wet hair to add volume pre blow drying and I have some heat protector spray and "glam curls" hairspray to set them in place.

My question is do I go for day old hair or freshly washed? If I go for day old won't the volumizing wet hair serum have no effect as I would have slept on the hair and potentially lost all the volume it originally added?

Any tips?

TIA

Have you got time to do a practice run?

My hair is normally fine in the morning that it's not washed but by the afternoon evening I am a grease ball especially with products in

Unfortunately no time for a test run as I'm chronically unorganised.

How often do you have to wash your hair? If it's every day then I would style freshly washed hair. If you can leave it a few days between washes I'd go for day-old hair.

IME freshly washed. My hair is very heavy and long and pulls down curls anyway but I can get it to curl and stay if freshly washed, lots of setting product and tonged into spirals or rag rolled.

I usually wash my hair about once a week.
It's nearly to my waist and very thick so it's a challenge to get any volume in it hence I'm not sure what's the best way to achieve that.

I’ve always understood better to freshly wash a bouncy blow dry but up dos are easier on hair washed the night before. ...

Winchester89 · 07/09/2018 20:34

I would wash the day before- but my hair is thick and falls out quicker freshly washed

setting lotion OP. Honestly, its in the granny section but it works on long thick hair.

Too late to chip in probably but i wanted to say you do have tine to practice IF you washed your hair yesterday. Simply try styling it and if it doesn't work then wash and stay again. Just means styling that much earlier in order to have time for a 2nd go!

Thanks for the advice!

I washed and blow dried it (ish) myself yesterday because I was worried my curls won't hold with it freshly washed. I never usually blow dry it (I've used one of those big round thermal brushes) and I'm happy with how manageable it seems afterwards.

I'm going to curl it and pin the curls for a bit whilst I do my makeup and hairspray them before I release them and hope for the best!

spray it with decent hairspray before you release the pins

happymummy12345 · 08/09/2018 08:36

I've got naturally curly hair but I have had it professionally curled a few times. I always washed it the day before.
Now I use mousse on my natural curls and diffuser dry it. I still wash and condition the day before, then just wet it in the shower when I'm about to style it. Works best for me

Just thought I'd update on how it held up.

Curled the hair and pinned the curls in place whilst I did my makeup and sprayed lots of the Ellnette Glam Curls hairspray on. I let it down and pinned one side and it held beautifully... for a whole of 20 mins and then it just went flat and wavy which is not what I wanted but it did look deliberate enough for no one to notice it wasn't meant to look like that.

Back to the drawing board.

Norms that is pretty much what my hair does, no matter what I try. The only time curls have stayed in is when it was washed the morning before, and the stylist used immense amounts of product on it so that it looked good but felt like cardboard. Looked fab all day, but felt grim. No other hairdresser has managed to do the same. (I don’t even bother trying - I don’t possess the skills to do anything other than wash and dry my hair, and that doesn’t always look decent!)

I lost my comment..:(

Anyhow:

I wash my hair, apply conditioner, leave in cream and let it air dry.

1 - 2 days later:

  1. Section hair
  1. Hair gel (obviously not too much...)
  1. Heat protection.
  1. Curling.
  1. Pinning.
  1. Spraying.
  1. Waiting... (How long did it take you to apply your makeup?)
  1. Letting the curls down and spraying them again.
  1. Lightly shaking my head (but I don't really separate my curls...), styling.
  1. More hair spray. A lot of hairspray tbh...

I have wavy and voluminous (very bushy...) hair, btw.

What is the barrel size of your curling iron? I don't use the large ones, I just end up with slightly wavier waves (and no curles...)
