Selling clothes on eBay- is it worth it?

Just that really- I’ve just had a wardrobe clearout and have got lots of nice clothes in good condition (mainly highstreet) that I probably won’t wear again so wondered about listing on eBay. I’ve listed one item, BNWT, bought for £46 a year ago and they’ve suggested a selling price of £7.60 based on similar sales. I get that if I sell a lot of stuff it all adds up but just wonder how people get on and if they do find it’s worth the hassle?

That should say between 30 and 40 %, not 3, doh

One more thought: if I think I'm going to get less than £8 profit on anything I sell, I don't bother. I think, all in, it's about at least an hour of my time per item. I cannot understand people who put on a kid's tshirt which cost £3.50 new. Why would I pay for second hand when the postage is going to cost almost as much as a new one? Bundles sell much better and I've done well out of a bundle like 3 pairs of boys shorts.

Yeah, I suppose really it’s about weighing up the cost of my time. I’ve got quite a lot of stuff I could sell but it seems fairly pot luck as to whether I’d get the lower or the higher end for it. I’m at the post office most weeks so that isn’t really an issue, it’s actually the photographing and preparing the clothes (need ironing etc) that would be the biggest time investment and you have to do that bit before anything else.

I’ve put one item on anyway, I’ll see what happens. I guess I can put on a couple of items a week and it won’t take that long and I can decide then if it’s worth it.

I’ve sold clothes that have been hanging in my wardrobe for a while. I’ve made over £400. Ebay fees are around £70 of that. I started doing it about 6 weeks ago. But have probably made every mistake in the book. Yes, I sold the wrong size. But to a lovely buyer who returned it. I sold lots of things for peanuts as I didn’t set a minimum. But, to a certain extent things are worth what buyers are willing to pay. There’s absolutely no point in listing at too high a price point. Even if the original buying price was high. Most of these items I was going to send to the charity shop. One person claims not to have received my parcel even though I have proof. Another person forgot that she had given me a relatives address for her parcel and then claimed it hadn’t arrived. It is a hassle and really time consuming. But I reckon you have to look upon it as a form of recycling and any money is better than no money.

I sell things I no longer want of mine DH’s and DC’s. To be honest often the things I think won’t sell often sell for more than the things I think that will sell. It’s things that would have gone to charity or recycling so anything I make is a bonus. I have just started putting all the autumn winter stuff I/we won’t wear and I am putting the money aside towards our next holiday.
If you take photos when it’s still hanging up on the hanger it’s easier than sorting into a pile, leaving it a while and it getting creased. I also copy and paste the description just changing the top part to save time.

I’ve been dieting for last 18months and have lost 5 stone so far so sold lots of clothes which no longer fit
I get into a routine where I list every week say 10 items and just carry on until they sell, but add another 10 items a week
Ignore eBay suggested price I don’t bother listing anything for less than a fiver
I buy my mail bags on amazon around £3 for 50-100 depending on size
I send everything recorded
M & S sells ok along with Designers at Debenhams ranges but I mainly sell brands such as Hobbs jaeger whistles Reiss etc as they do better
Swimming costumes always sell well too
I only sell shoes if unworn or worn once

JaceLancs · 07/09/2018 07:28

Forgot to say I average around £50 a week which is £40 ish after fees, I tend to save up for holidays and Xmas

Ivytheterrible · 07/09/2018 10:33

There are Facebook selling groups for lots of brands. Joules, Boden etc. I’ve sold lots this way and you get a good price and I’ve never had any problems with buyers.

NotMeNoNo · 07/09/2018 13:33

You just need to get organised and do it in batches. I actually had so much to sell after losing weight I bought a mannequin for £20 on FB local, the photos are x 100 better and nearly everything sold.

I photograph about 20 items in one session in the conservatory, then sit down with tape measure and make up all the listings. This is one of my pictures.

You have nothing to lose really. Stick it on as an auction and see. Some things go for way more than I ever expect, some a lot less and it’s disappointing but it evens out. I have found recently that people aren’t prepared to pay too much but it’s still been worthwhile every time I’ve done a batch.

I sell clothes here and there,on eBay

Always managed to sell stuff quite easily.

Use recycled packaging

Charlotte48 · 09/09/2018 18:27

I've not sold on EBay for ages but likewise had a clear out the other week and sent some things to a charity shop and sold some better items on EBay. A skirt and stretch boots didn't sell but I sold a handbag, a pair of Jasper Conran black knee length boots and a M&S leather skirt for £49 so not bad but EBay now deduct money for postage and PayPal take commission too. It is worth selling designer clothes or labels but in my experience you don't make much - or things simply don't sell - it is a lot of effort for a small reward.
