Is there anything I can put on my hair to take the old dye out, my hairs quite long and it will take forever for the dye to grow out

I'm.not sure there is. I got my hairdresser to help transition with highlights then had it cut quite short.

Thanks, I don't really suit short hair, I've seen lots of pictures of women with long grey bobs and that's what I want

This will strip colour out.
Be careful though, it turned my blond green.
If you're taking out a dark colour and your hair has never been bleached it will work .
You might want to use silver shampoo to stop the grey looking yellow

No there isn’t. If you use a colour removing product your hair won’t be natural underneath because of the hydrogen peroxide used in dyes to fix colour. Even using semi -permanent ones.

You have the following options-

1)Have fine highlights put in where you are most grey and tone them grey to help with transition. This is expensive, the toner will need refreshing, your hair condition will be trashed and it will take longer.

  1. head shave and wear a wig if you couldn’t hack the look.

  2. very short haircut, bleached to almost white and then toned grey.

  3. use a root touch up until you have enough growth for a pixie.

  4. brave the grow out and just let it be.

I think of all the options I'll start wearing a scarfGrin

I did this - it's grown out brilliantly. I did have short hair to start with though.

Don’t use a dye stripper from the shops: I did this and it ruined my hair. It went all the colours of the rainbow and had a terrible texture.
12 inched of hair had to be cut off at the hair dressers and I paid £150 to correct it.
Please don’t DIY.

I heard of horror stories about dye strippers so I grew mine out. It took about 3 years of 4 weekly trims to get rid of the old coloured hair and there were bad days when I very nearly reached for the dye. I'm so glad I held out. My hair is now half way down my back and in fabulous condition. I get loads of compliments on the colour. Be brave and go for it, you won't regret it.

@Sue51: I was that horror story.

I have just done this recently. Was a dark bottle brown. I am just so sick of dying the roots every three weeks and being a slave to the box dyes. Over past three months I have been to the hairdressers twice and have gone much lighter, most recently they stripped the colour out. I am not completely sure what they have done other than I know it has been bleached with some kind of treatment so shouldn't be completely fucked. It also has highlights and low lights I think. It took ages and cost £££. It is currently a pale ashy blonde just now whereas I'd been hoping for grey straight away but having now spent hours scouring the internet reading everything and anything about Grey hair, unless you go really short It just isn't realistic. There will always be a considerable period of time whilst it grows out but there are things you can do to make the transition less noticeable but it costs. I have just ordered Fanola no yellow shampoo so am hoping that will help.

It is very liberating though not worrying about the roots coming through. Ironic that after years of hating them for coming through so quickly I am now constantly looking to see if they have grown. I'm also desperate to know what it will all look like. Sometimes I think it's going to be a steely grey colour and sometimes I think it will be silver and then I panic and think it's just going to be horrible! Good luck wit whatever you decide to do. I had been thinking of starting my own going grey thread!

I did do colour stripper, and though my hair wasn't natural underneath, it was a lot lighter and I didn't have a massive stripe. Where I was white round my face I used high lift bleach to blend it in which worked well
