Cutting my own hair - good idea???

Ineedahouse · 02/09/2018 20:41

I need a haircut after too much blonde dye - I am trying to save a bit of money though so thought I could maybe have a go myself! I have cut my own fringe lots of times and cut my daughters hair - have YouTubed diy long blunt bobs and think...'what could possibly go wrong!??'.

Anyone else got any words of advice before I get snippy in the bathroom!!??

Is you hair straight, wavy or curly? A friend of mine has curly hair, a short-ish style and cuts it herself. I would never had guessed, she looks fabulous.

I wouldn't be brave enough on straight hair... Could your daughter cut it?

Ineedahouse · 02/09/2018 20:54

Its a bit wavy not poker straight and i prefer a messy style so never use straightners.

My daughter would love to do it but she is only 3 so would end up like Vivien from young ones. Grin

I'm a qualified hairdresser and did my own. It was a disaster! If you bring it over the shoulders to cut, when you flip it back it's really long and uneven at the back! Where abouts are you? (Not like an address but rough area?

Hawkmoth · 02/09/2018 20:55

I have and it looked really smart (after a couple of days finding odd long bits). But now it needs a trim and I don't know how to do it!

motortroll · 02/09/2018 20:57

I'm always cutting my hair cos I'm rubbish at remembering to make appointments!!

Mine is wavy but I also straighten it occasionally. I've cut layers and everything!

It's never perfect. Just don't keep cutting and cutting expecting it to get better!!

I'm not sure I'd attempt a one length bob. Layers are easier to get away with!

Ineedahouse · 02/09/2018 21:00

Hawkmoth - did you do the pigtails diy from youtube or just cut it?

All the videos show it being brought over the shoulders to cut and the tidied up a bit afterwards. Is this really the wrong way? Ive watched quite a few and they all use that method!?

Im nearish to Liverpool and hairdressers are at least 10 on every street. Im just being tight! 😂

My hair is in the pigtails and ready to go!! I feel less brave now though...

I smooth mine into a ponytail at the front of my head then chop it from there - gives a few layers as well that way. It looks nice and you can skip away at any uneven bits afterwards.

Found it on YouTube.

roseyposeyshmosey · 02/09/2018 21:04

unless your hair is quite long then I wouldn't attempt it. the problem with pigtails is that you're punching the hair together, which can cause lots of uneven hair - have you ever seen a hairdresser gather large sections on hair to cut?

unless your hair is curly or very wavy, I really wouldn't contemplate it.

can you ring around a few salons tomorrow and see if they have any trainee days coming up? they're usually free.

roseyposeyshmosey · 02/09/2018 21:05

punching = bunching Confused

Ineedahouse · 02/09/2018 21:06

Hmmm my hair is very very very fine and doesnt like layers. I had the wprst haircut of my entire life about 2 years ago and i am only just getting the layers out - they will be mostly gone if this diy cut goes well!!

I think im just going to do it...

I tried that (the mumsnet haircut) it looked terrible.. so I went back to my standard which is 2 pigtails, chop each side, then pull it to the back in a low pony and chop off anything sticking out too much.

I think it looks fine, no-one's ever said it looks bad.. I have hair that doesn't know if it's straight or curly, and I normally just put it in a pony tail anyway so I have a lot of leeway.

Whipsmart · 02/09/2018 21:09

I've done it loads and had compliments from people who didn't know I'd gone it myself! I learned from YouTube, doing a ponytail at the top of my head, holding it straight in the air and cutting straight across. Just do a tiny bit at a time and remember it's only hair and it does grow back Grin

dudsville · 02/09/2018 21:11

I've recently starting cutting my own hair and recently started getting compliments! I have fibe wavy hair. I YouTubed a million guides and videos. My preferred technique is the pony tail at the top of my hair line. I do three trims for 3 different layers and then my fringe. I've done it twice now and I'm so happy with it. Good luck op!

sunshineseaside · 02/09/2018 21:17

How did it go OP?

I did it in June - longish hair to just above shoulder line. It took quite a bit of tidying up but it looked a lot smarter. Only thing I will never learn is to NOT cut fringe myself - it always goes wrong Blush
But as PP says...it's only hair and it does grow x

SloeBerries · 02/09/2018 21:31

I’ve done mine in the ponytail method, people always compliment it!

lpchill · 02/09/2018 21:41

I've cut my hair for a long time. I only go to the hairdressers if I'm changing the style dramatically. I watch/ed a lot of YouTube videos for all the different techniques then used a combination. I do the pony tail at the back and pull it down to the correct length. Then I make sure it's even then you could add layers but I just soften the ends the feather the front (growing out fringe) no one notices and compliments me as my hair always looks well trimmed as I can trim it more often. Invest in decent scissors and thinning ones.

Ineedahouse · 02/09/2018 21:52

Its done!!! I actually really like it!! Its definitely not perfect and if i wore my hair poker straight it might look a bit uneven but messed up and wavy its fine!

Its bang on the length I wanted too and I have saved myself 35 quid. Feels good!! Might do it again in a few months - but with sharper scissors next time - The ones i have got are from bodycare and have been ok for little fringey trims but only now am fully aware of how crappy they are.

Fabulous Ineedahouse!!!!! Cutting my own hair has been surprisingly easy, after a good few years of hating the haircuts I got from a range of salons. I'm glad you got a good result.

ChishandFips33 · 05/09/2018 20:26

I've saved a fortune doing my own!

I figure it can't be worse than before I cut it (as by that point it's uneven and has tatty ends)

Ineedahouse · 05/09/2018 20:51

I'm so pleased its not that unusual!! I think with a bit more practice it will get easier (and straighter). I actually cant wait for it to grow a bit so I can try again. Its quite addictive doing all those little snips....

OP posts:
dudsville · 05/09/2018 21:07

As a new convert I agree. At first those snips are anxiety provoking. Obe I learned I wasn't going to somehow cut polkadots into my hair ir became a pleasure!

ChishandFips33 · 05/09/2018 22:33

To cut the length, I divide it in half (as if making low pigtails ) and pull each side round to the front in to a ponytail under my chin and chop
