One side of my face looks dodgy in photos?

Ok so this has been bothering me for a while now. If I just pull out my phone and look into the selfie cam, even without taking a picture, the right side of my face looks dodgy. It looks bigger, like there's extra bone or something. It looks more noticeable when flipped, but that's not the point. In the mirror it doesnt look nearly as bad.

Im not talking about my face just looking a bit different because the whole image is flipped, one side of my face looks exactly the same it's just the right side. Its stupid I know but it's getting to the point where I obsess about it.

So ignoring the flipped image, does just looking into the camera like a mirror highlight certain areas? Or am I going doolally? Would really appreciate the input! 😊

I get this because one side of my smile looks almost droopy in selfies but normal in the mirror & in other photos! It's really odd but not sure why it happens.
So I don't take many selfies.

I was talking to dd 17 yo about this the other day and think all this selfie stuff is making people insecure. Dd has perfect lips but thinks one side is longet and thinner. Her friend wants a nose job!! I showed her a picture of me where one eye looked higher, more circular and larger than the other. She said I looked like abstract art but agreed I don’t look like this in real life Grin

Peanutbuttercups21 · 01/09/2018 13:18

It's the fish eye lense, it curves and also makes the part of the face closest to the camera look bigger (distorts). I have very pronounced cheekbones that look uneven and wonky in selfies Grin

Everyone is shocked when they flip an image, as it just looks "wrong" btw

BlairWaldorfsHeadband · 01/09/2018 13:19

I have a weird side too lol

GinaCarbonara · 01/09/2018 19:50

One side of my face is lopsided.

I can cover one half of my face in a photo and it looks beautiful and bright and pert and youthful and then cover the opposite side and I look like a fucking hobgoblin.

I'm noticing it more and more. It's also the same in my passport photo so not just selfies.

AlyTab · 02/09/2018 19:16

Hobgoblin is right! Left side of my face, absolutely the same no matter which way its flipped, right side just looks wrong. It looks just bigger and wider in general, like its drooping too.

I look at everyone elses face and nobody else has this issue! Doesnt help the fact that everyone I've asked thinks I'm crazy. Glad it's not just me that has this insecurity in a way.

One side of my face is more wrinkly and seems to be ageing faster. The reason usually given for this is driving because one side of your face is usually closest to the sun. This can't be the explanation for me as I don't drive. I usually walk or take public transport where I can sit on either side.

willdoitinaminute · 02/09/2018 20:48

I have a lob sided face but I don’t notice it when I look in the mirror, only on photos. Fortunately our brains actually filter and correct facial asymmetry to a degree. But the more extreme asymmetry becomes noticeable ( my job means I spend a lot of time looking at faces).
Very few people have perfect facial symmetry, a famous example is Kate Moss, this means when you put a mirror along the vertical midline of their face both side are identical.
So the good news is that no one else will really notice you have asymmetry in real life.

rightknockered · 02/09/2018 21:48

If I take a selfie when one side of my face covered, and then take another with the other side covered, I look like two different people, that are possibly related to each other.

EleanorLavish · 02/09/2018 23:06

Mariah Carey agrees with you! I read years ago that she only lets one side of her face be photographed/filmed, and true enough through the years she always has one side on show!
She recently spoke about why.

EnidButton · 03/09/2018 03:23

If you're genuinely obsessing over it I'd stop taking selfies and studying yourself in the mirror for a good while. You're in danger of triggering body dysmorphia and anxiety. Go cold turkey and focus on something else for a bit.

Guarantee there's is nothing wrong with your face. Phone cameras are well known for causing distortions. They're not very good with perspective when it comes to faces. Particularly selfies.

But even so, back away from the mirror for a bit and try not to think about it.

AlyTab · 03/09/2018 05:40

@EnidButton I've tried that actually. It did help initially, I just stopped thinking about it. But then it comes back. I just need to be able to feel ok about it. That's why I keep taking pictures over and over again. If I get comfortable with enough pictures then i can stop taking them for a while. Tricky to explain.

I will check out the Mariah Carey thing though, that sounds like a thing she would do. You've all made me feel a lot better about this kind of thing so thank you :)

Are you always taking the pictures with your right hand? Have you tried taking them left handed?

People's faces are not usually symmetrical although in general we prefer symmetrical faces. Is this something that you can see if you look back at pictures from 5, 10, 15 years ago (assuming no major weight change) or is it something from the last few weeks or months?

AlyTab · 03/09/2018 13:48

@shouldwestayorshouldwego well generally either right handed or with both hands. Does it make a difference? I dont really have pictures to look at, I've never really taken them. I only really have some photos from when I was very young (under the age of 5 generally) and any photos I've taken since then, which isn't many but they have since been lost or deleted. I'm not quite sure when it started.

I have a long fringe (just below chin length) that covers the sides of my face so if its strategically placed it's not as much of an issue. Behind my ears is the issue but it's hard not to.
