Warm winter coats - what are you going for?

My four year old Merrell winter coat is starting to look a bit shabby. It’s been great, as it is really warm, cleans easily and has some level of shower proofing.

But, what do I replace it with? I need something warm, and ideally a bit waterproof for the school run, standing round at the park etc this winter. Last year, most of he mum’s at school seems to have padded, long, almost puffa style coats, but I’m not sure that look is for me.

If it makes any difference, I’m ina rural area, and budget is flexible (within reason!).

Thanks for any ideas.

Not waterproof but I bought a skater style coat from joe browns. Suits my figure and I like to use a brolly anyway.

This in navy. They only have xl left but they do come up a bit small.

Probably a bit um... volumous on my big bum but I don't care. :)

I've seen a black belted parka in River Island that I like. I wear parkas in winter as I can't drive at present & they are generally water resistant, warm & have a hood & the River Island one looks stylish not too geeky.

I tried the Uniqlo ModCoat , but even sizing down it looked like a bag (if I'd gone down another size it would've pulled across my back)

I'm swithering about a Uniqlo Ultra Light but I'm not a fan of too padded , and I don't need too warm .

I’m going for this. Bloody pricy but I’m willing to pay any amount of money to stay warm this winter. It’s a lot nicer in the flesh than in the photos. Less shiny.

If this doesn’t work I’m going to borrow my dads down mountaineering suit and do the school run as if I were conquering Everest Grin.

I’m on my second Didrikson parka and would highly recommend. The sizing does vary with the different styles I find so worth trying on if you can or buying to sizes and sending one back.

Plus my current one has 7 pockets 😍 , thumb holes and is fully adjustable with a hood that will stay up in a howling gale.

They’re on the pricier end, between 180 - 250. I get mine on line as cheaper.

Lands End are really good if you want warmth/functionality/quality. I have a wool pea coat, in its third year and barely looks any different to the day I bought it. They also do the quilted /padded style coats.

Didriksons at TKMaxx

I love my Esprit hooded parka (down) as it is fitted and has a belt, so it's puffy but I don't feel like a bag of spuds.

I also have a long wool coat (for work/over a dress) and a wax jacket that is lined and hooded and ideal for wet dogwalks

Ever since moving to this country, I have had multiple coats, can never settle on one!

LockedOutOfMN · 01/09/2018 19:00

Moncler ski jackets are really warm and they last forever.

Landsend is brilliant!!! All the techno of the most expensive North Face etc but much less. Last for years

RedneckStumpy · 01/09/2018 19:01

Carhartt, anything Carhartt!!

Equimum · 01/09/2018 22:06

Thanks ladies, there are some great ideas here, and places I would never have thought to look. I had never even heard of Didrikson!

I want a lovely wool camel coat but am currently losing weight and refuse to spend much money on clothes till I'm closer to my happy weight. I've bought a belted camel coat from H&M from ebay in the meantime and am actually delighted with it.

When I'm at or near my goal, which will hopefully be this side of Christmas, I'll see if I can replace it with a smaller and better model. I like Hobbs for coats.

I just bought myself a pale silver grey parka £95 by Lipsy in Next.

It's reversible so the other side is black but I prefer the silvery grey.

It's lovely & cosy & looks good too.
