Are suit jackets essential for interviews?

I have an interview for a senior admin role in education. I don't own a suit jacket. Would I get away with a smart blouse and black trousers?

Watching with interest I've never known whether these days it's okay to be smart in an interview e.g. shirt and trousers or you still have to wear suit and the whole works.

Personally ive always worn a suit on the basis that it's always better to be dressed up rather than down.

Fairylea · 31/08/2018 17:59

I always bung a jacket over my arm to make it look like I do have one and can be smart - even when the jacket doesn’t actually fit me anymore and I couldn’t actually get it on if I wanted to BlushBlush

Rosetintedglass · 31/08/2018 18:04

Fairylea Grinactually thought about doing that last week decided to go smart dress instead.
Depends on the establishment and how they dress. If its through an agency just ask them

flugelhorn81 · 31/08/2018 18:07

Oh I definitely don't think it's essential unless it's a very stuffy corporate role with a strict dress code. A smart top, cardigan or dress should be fine. I wouldn't buy one especially.

flugelhorn81 · 31/08/2018 18:08

And thinking about it, I rarely see many women wearing suit jackets on my commute to work in central London.

I have interviewed many times...
I want people to be professional but I wouldn't expect a jacket.
Good luck

swirlyswirl · 31/08/2018 18:17

I've never worn a jacket to an interview, I think as long as you're smart no one will even think about it - and I work in financial services so pretty corporate.

LagoDiComo · 31/08/2018 18:30

I work in HE (management) and that sounds fine to me

JynxaSmoochum · 31/08/2018 22:42

I've worn smart dresses for my most recent interviews and got the jobs. I'm not comfortable in jackets so that doesn't boost my confidence.

Amaaboutthis · 31/08/2018 22:52

Not at all. I interview a lot and most people wear smart trousers and a shirt and even the men don’t bother with a suit or tie anymore even for fairly senior roles, they wear smart chinos and a shirt

JaceLancs · 31/08/2018 23:38

I wear mainly dresses or non matching jacket
I don’t own a suit
Senior management
When I’m interviewing unless really awful, out there or scruffy I don’t even notice what they are wearing
It’s all about do you meet the job spec and demonstrate your skills and knowledge well at the interview

TroubledLichen · 01/09/2018 00:26

I’ve never not worn a jacket to an interview but I also don’t own a single shirt or suit. Usually I’d wear the jacket over a dress. So I’d say your shirt/smart trousers combo sounds fine, unless it’s chilly and you need an extra layer, don’t wear a slobby cardigan for instance.

SweatyFretty · 01/09/2018 00:29

You need to dress for the job you're applying for. I work in creative media so a suit wouldn't work at all. Do the people already doing the job wear them?

trulybadlydeeply · 01/09/2018 00:35

I agree, I rarely notice what the people I am interviewing are wearing, the only times i do are the extremes so I always remember the person that turned up in jeans, for example. Trousers and smart top would be absolutely fine.

NellMangel · 01/09/2018 16:59

Thanks all. I'll not bother with a jacket. They don't suit me and I'll probably look smarter without!

I always used to think yes, but recently I've noticed interview dress is becoming a bit less formal than in the past. I still wear a jacket myself but I think there is a wider range of options these days.

God I sound old!!!

RavenLG · 01/09/2018 17:20

My last interview was a shirt tucked into an a-line skirt. No jacket as it was summer (last year) so too warm. You’ll be fine without a jacket as long as the rest of your outfit is smart. I would personally go for a cardigan though.
